Rolex Explorer 124270 Review

While returning a jacket at Dick’s I decided to stop by my AD. As a customer and regular visitor the SA said they just got in an Explorer.

While he was in the back room I asked for recommendations ‘like now’ via a new thread.

Had mixed but mostly positive responses.

The end result is that I purchased the Explorer 36.

Impressions:

Super comfy

Easy to read dial

Right size for my 6.75” wrist. BTW the AD had a wrist measuring tape. So my wrist size is official.

Lume is excellent

19mm bracelet is better then anticipated. Love the feel of ouster bracelets!

The dial is a true black. My last purchase there was a DJ black dial that was dark grey in my opinion. Anyway, the dial is super classic.

The 3230 movement is works amazingly well and is highly regarded.

While reading thru the many reviews of the new Explorer, I found this one to be the most detailed. It’s long and extremely focused. I like this part of the conclusion by Blake Buettner

“Setting aside the hype and the heritage, the Explorer is a very simple tool watch. It is perhaps the greatest distillation of a Rolex sport watch available to purchase new. It’s not as flashy as a GMT or Daytona, not as singularly focused as a Submariner or Sea-Dweller, and if you take the crown off the dial you’re left with a very well built field watch of sorts. That’s all part of the charm of the Explorer, it’s not really presenting itself as anything other than just that: a very well built field watch. It also happens to be a Rolex, and that comes with a lot of baggage these days, for better or worse.”

Good thing that jacket didn’t fit. Congrats on the Explorer. Beautiful watch. Wear it in good health.
