I did not know a whole lot about watches, in general, before joining the forum. I joined specifically to source a bracelet as several middle links were tearing and it had been living in a drawer at that point for about 20 years. I wanted to start wearing it, I mean it's a Rolex and it hadn't seen the light of day for a long time. WTF was the matter with me? After seeing the bracelet restorations i went that route. Kind of kicking myself for not servicing first but that will happen soon plus a new crystal. That would be the sum total of my plans for this watch going forward. That and wearing it more. I think my Dad was kind of insulted that I have not been wearing it all the time. Instead I wear a Seiko 150M Quartz his parents gave me in 1980. As you can see from the original condition he wore that watch everywhere but gave it to me when I graduated. He has an Explorer II with yellowed lume plots and hands, looks great and never takes it off.

That GMT is spectacular. When you do get it serviced, ask your watchmaker to look at the lume in the GMT hand itself - it appears from your last photo that it could be coming loose?

Nice catch if it is! Looking back on that image the shadow does look quite deep on the back edge of the pointer compared to the other hands. Sound advice, thanks for commenting.

Congratulation, is a very beautiful watch! The gold Tiffany stamp is great. The paper work are definitely important, they tell the history of the piece. Is the second best thing after the original warranty. Good idea the photo with your Dad affidavit written on the back.
As a collector I would try to find a nice box and some pamphlet from the correct era for a complete set |

Mr Gooden
With my deepest respect to Mr. Walter Gooden,
Is there anybody with even the closest Rolex repair ability (today)? Where is that establishment, who is that person? Mr. Gooden’s Rolex touch was evident to me, I had my 4 Rolexes serviced by him. Please advise on a local Rolex specialist? Thank you, Harvey |

They absolutely make a difference. Have you watched the video about the man who bought a 6542 GMT Master on his last day at his army base in Germany? His CO told him "don't forget to buy a Rolex before you go home." He bought it, not knowing anything about it, and went back home. He kept every piece of paper he ever received for the watch, receipts, tags, boxes, service records, you name it. He brought it all to the Antiques Roadshow and the appraiser said just the fact that he kept all of that stuff doubled the value of his piece. Hands down. The man was in tears when he learned how valuable this thing had become. Such a touching moment and it couldn't happen to a nicer, regular Joe. Not a collector or savvy person, just a regular guy.
Keep it. People love that stuff and it shows you took care of it over the years, plus it shows what was done to the watch so nobody is guessing. If you are careful enough to save all of that, plus you had it serviced and didn't let it run dry, you probably took good care of the watch in other ways, too. https://youtu.be/li0mRLcGbU8 |
