Daytona Availability

I would love to buy a Daytona 116500 black dial. Secondary market seems to be in the $22-24K range.

Like most folks, I have a hard time paying something like 55-70% over list. The alternative seems to be waiting forever.

I haven't followed historical pricing - has the 116500 ever traded in the $15-18K range? If so, how long ago?

Even if it has, from my understanding, that’s the one and only model that has retained its hard to get status for the last 12 years or so... don’t expect to see it go that low in the near future. Welcome to the club lol

If you can afford to pay the premium - well, life is short. And after a month or two you will forget what you paid. Otherwise, wait for 10 years, or tell yourself the Daytona is a girls watch and move on to something else. lol

Daytona’s were 12-14k GBP throughout 2016.

Possible pickup at a high 11

2017 it climbed a bit more. Then the Paul Newman Daytona sold and prices started to go berserk

Personally I totally don’t get the people who pay a massive premium.

I’d only ever consider paying the future value of a watch if I thought it would take 4-6 years. So that’s 3 5% price rises. That puts me at 11k. I’d push to 11.5 maybe 12.

Which was possible a few years back.

22-24k current list price is just total insanity for a high production / not that special / hyped watch.

Having said that someone paid close to 42k for a green dial yellow gold Daytona today

RRP 26.5k gbp

I own the WG blue dial Daytona ; on the list for the green dial

The premium paid could buy another PM which would get you close to the green dial. Just don’t get it!

My advice is to buy the new AP royal oak Chrono in 38mm when it hits stores. Way nicer than a Daytona and similar prices. Similar size.

Not yet. But realistically the average person probably has a better chance of getting the new ROC Chrono 38 at MSRP from ad before a 116500. And that is saying a lot because you can't get the AP quite yet.

That AP is really nice! I'd consider that well before a Daytona in the same price range.

Those prices were before the Paul Newman Daytona sold. That kicked of the crazy prices for Daytona, and frankly all Rolex eventually. I would never pay double retail for the Daytona, or any other watch to be honest. usd24k is AP money brother!

The Zenith Daytona around 20k is a better value if you are willing to pay that kind of coin for a steel Rolex.

i don't think 116500 black or white will ever dip below $20k USD again

Perhaps devastating world recession or major war might make below $20k possible

Most people want this watch for hype, legibility sux.

ask yourself again why you want this watch?

It’s not worth more than retail msrp IMO.

Hans Wilsdorf when he entrusted the company to the people responsible looking after
Rolex yesterday and today ....did not want any of that happening.

Without considerable prior purchase history with an AD, the probability of getting a Daytona at retail is probably 0.0. On the secondary market, at $21-23K it is a bargain, and the black dial is super cool. my.02.

Its a free market society. As long as people pay those prices they will continue to stay at those prices.
It is only until the watches sit stale at the inflated prices will the price finally start to come down.

I believe there were a few in that range shortly after release, perhaps late 2016 early 2017. Get the 116520 and save some coin. It will always be the first Daytona with the in-house movement, and more consistent with its tool watch heritage. I mean this business of people throwing money at the new version just because they slapped a new bezel on it is beyond madness. I mean pure marketing gimmik...period. The use of ceramics on watches goes back to the 1970's and brittle dinner plate material has no business on a tool watch in my opinion. I'm afraid Rolex was late to the game here, wanted to refresh the daytona, but did not do the actual leg work here of devising some new material. I mean, its apples and oranges, but look at Omega, with their new Aqua Terra Ultra Light-its not for me, but thats some leg work and innovation which stands in contrast to Rolex slapping on a bezel and saying look what we did and then folks fawning all over it.

There are plenty of Daytona’s in ADs safes. They are hoarding them to keep the prices high. It’s really that simple. As long as dumbasses keep paying 8k over list and believe they really have a 2 year waiting list it’s going to continue to happen. That’s another reason Rolex went with scrambled serial numbers so you can’t possibly tell how long those watches have been sitting in ADs safes.

So is anyone buying at the current prices? Must be some buyers or market dynamics would drive prices down. So what type of person is willing to pay 180% of list?

I had the old black dial pre ceramic version and sold it to a friend ( for 1000 pounds less than the retail price i paid for it, big mistake ) because I couldn't read the dial , god knows how racing car drivers could see it doing 150 MPH .
Saying that I now own 3 other Daytona's that I just treat as jewelry

It’s so easy to presume what a dead man wants, especially if it fits nicely into your own narrative.

Not sure why you are asking this question. Either wait to get it from AD or pay the going rate. If you’re waiting for it to come down then you’ll be waiting a long long long time

Remember, the last 10 year run of the 116520 went through I think 3 price increases, and of course one big recession. By the end, gray prices sometimes were less than retail. But retail was also about 3k more than it started. Long story shot, but other just get a PM OF new and build up some Buying cred with the store or just wait until the end of the hype cycle.

Even if the manufacturer is not manipulating the market, for sure the grays are cornering the market to increase margins, even if they have to sit on a lot of supply to do it.
