Incoming - dj 1603

My new 36mm DJ arrived today and I'm over the moon with it.

Looks incredible in the light with the light bouncing off the markers and applied crown.

Fluco strap sets it off nicely. The original bracelet is missing but it would probably be stretched beyond use by now.

Dated 1965.

Thoughts?

What a beauty . Can never go wrong with a vintage DJ. I have a 1601 TT getting overhauled and I can’t wait

Dial/hands have been relumed. Dial looks refinished. Case has been polished.

Absolutely gorgeous! Sweet alpha hands and those markers are the perfect 1965 touch. :)

Since we're doing 1603 on straps...

I think she’s a beauty! I just picked up a 1601 myself, dated to 1971. I LOVE the dauphine hands on yours! Wear it well!

Very nice DJ with a sigma dial. Mine has a sigma (grey) as well. Do you believe what they say about sigma dials having white gold hands? Just wondering

Keeping the theme of 1603 on straps

My 1603 with grey buckley dial - very simple but love it!

IIRC, sigma dials were a cooperative marketing arrangement among many Swiss watch makers (not just Rolex) in the 70s Quartz Crisis, when it appeared likely that quartz watches were simply going to drive mechanical watches to extinction.

At that time, a sigma dial indicated that the hour markers and hands of the watch were made of gold. It’s not clear to me why that tiny bit of gold was supposed to make a difference to anyone, but ... marketing.

An original gray dial is a good bit rarer than sigma dials in general.

Yes, the sigma does indicate gold markers and hands... originally. Given the age of my watch I'm not 100% sure what is still present but I would suspect the markers are gold, hands I am not sure. Needs a service at some point so I'll see then I guess.

The Sigma designation is superfluous since Rolex markers and hands are always made of gold anyways.

Believe this is true for modern but not vintage.

Here's my 1603. The grey dial is so unique, shows so many different shades based on the light. I believe my dial and hands are originals. The lume is gone from the hands and worn at the digits.

Pardon the difference in sizes, I'm still learning how to post. You can actually see the patina on my dial.
