I'd hesitate giving you any advice to go any further down than a half size on the 2030. However if there's any chance you could size them in person or have the ability to return that might be best.
Thanks, Dan. I think 11.5 is the size for me. I don’t think there is any place nearby that carries Viberg.

alden may lack consistency in their QC compared to other brands, but these put a smile on my face when I lace them up.

The three pairs of winter boots I use the most are C&J Snowdons, EG Galways and G&G Thorpes. I walk on average about 6km per day and they all hold up very well and are comfortable.

I would recommend a ridgeway sole for winter, that is what is fitted to my Galways and Thorpes. The Snowdon boots have a commando sole and gravel tends to get stuck in it.

Get a pair of Blundstone 550s. Beat them up, get them wet, slushy, salty. They can take it. Super comfy, too. You might be able to get away wearing them in the office, but if not, just keep some nicer shoes or boots there during winter and switch when you get there and before you leave for the day. I've worn Blunnies for 20+ years. They are the best bad weather and travel boot I've ever found.

Clark's Vargo Boots for commuting and casual wear.

Strictly for walking/hiking I recommend some basic Keen Boots. Great choice if you bring dress shoes with you and change into them. I left a pair of black dress shoes in my office during the winter. I'd wear hiking boots on my commute and change when I got to the office.

Neither choice will break the bank.

Be very considerate too whatever you go for, that the leather is prepared and looked after.

Ideally rotate your shoes each day so the moisture can evaporate - shoe trees really work wonders in preserving them as well.

You really couldn't have made a better choice with regards to this particular style.

Exactly what I did when I lived in the Midwest. I kept my good shoes under my desk, and changed when I got to work. Vasque Sundowner Gore-Tex was what I wore out in the elements. Unless Chicago weather has changed in the last few years, I don’t think you’re going to find a do it all boot. You need an indoor AND an outdoor boot.

Yeah, they rock. And for a dressier, leather-soled, properly-welted Chelsea boot, RM Williams craftsman (mine are in black kangaroo leather) are my favorite. With my Alden cigarshell chukka as a close second.

Love my Blundstone 553 for winter wear. A little thinsulate makes a huge difference!

I also have a pair of RM Williams comfort craftsman that are an extremely versatile boot, espcially for a one shoe city travel option.

However, nothing makes my feet say “Yeah Baby” more than my EG Galways. My 341 lasted C&J chukkas are a close second.

Like the OP the thought of a $1,500 pair of boots seems onerous. But these are classic boots that should last 20 years with commone sense care. That being said C&J hits the sweet spot of value for my tastes and remain the main maker I give my business to.

I recently picked up a pair of Cobbler Union chelseas and hope that these live up to my expectations. They have a cap toe boot that might be perfect for the OP at about $450. Saw them in person and they seem very well crafted.

These two paragraphs kind of says it all. For those who own them we know exactly what you mean. For those that don't and never care to well to each your own.

Really not much different than choosing a Rolex over a Timex or any of those two bit disposable smart watches.

For truly crappy weather, I do have a fairly new pair of red wing chelseas that ran me a more reasonable $240. seem to keep out puddle water well

I have some Alden Cordovan boots with Crepe sole that I wear frequently along with my Indy boots. Both work great in snow and more dressed up moments. Once it gets really nasty (NYC), i switch to insulated LLBean boots due to the rubber bottom that serves well once slush builds up. And as for Alden’s. You can get them refinished at the factory and they last quite a while. I prefer that over disposable options.
I do wear Salomon boots if I need tough outdoor protection and warmth for work outside. Not really suitable for a night out in the city...

I have some Church's Chukka boots and also, Loake do very good looking boots that are worth considering for about Ł200.

Does anyone know how "waxed suede" holds up in the winter? I do fancy getting some of the ones from Church's. (British winter is normally more rain than snow).

Don't use dubbin if its regular suede or nuback.

happy with the Vibergs. I measure 9D and went with the 8.5 service boot

Realistically I could probably wear an 8 with thin socks. With boot socks these fit great though
