5146G vs 5167R

one of these will likely be my next patek.
vastly different styles, in a perfect world I'd have both.
but in meantime, will only be able to handle one.

both have their merits, and i believe would blend well into the collection. but in the likelihood i would sell it of later down the line, which model is likely to depreciate more/less?

I prefer the AC and MP complications in the 5146, and the dial looks balanced and symmetrical.

The rubber strap on the 5167R puts this watch in no man's land IMO. I think a PM dress watch is more compatible with a leather strap, while a rubber strap is more compatible with a SS case for an overall sporty look. This is just my opinion.

I will choose the 5146.

I'd choose the one I like more, which is the 5167R.

These are two totally different watches. One is a complicated dress watch and the other is a sports watch without complications. I would get the one that you think you will wear more often.

of course i knew I'd comments like 'get what u like' or 'they're completely different watches'.

yes, get that and agree to both accounts. but not the question.
which model would tend to depreciate more?

i was originally thinking the 5167R would depreciate less. even though PMs tend to drop significantly in the secondary market, my logic is that the entire aquanaut line will have a positive drag effect to the price increases across nautilus.

The 5167R has been produced since 2009 and the 5146G since 2006. Neither of them are in high demand and they usually sell for quite a bit off their MSRP on the secondary market.

Although past sales prices are not always an accurate predictor of future sales price, you can look at historical auction sale prices at collectorsquare.com as a reference. However anyone's guess as to which one will hold value better in the future is pure speculation.

Personally I don't usually buy sports watches in precious metal. But then I broke my own rule and got an Aquanaut in WG, so get the 5167R is you like it. Most people will say get a SS sports watch if you are looking to maintain maximum value retention.

Really looking forward to see who chimes in for which watch. Seriously considering th 5146 myself in white gold. For the aquanaut, I think the time zone model peaks more interest. And the dual time zone & date feature make it seem less of a sports model.
That’s also on my radar.
Please let us know where you go on this!
And great choices!!!

this is my line of thinking too.

Plus OP you already have some very nice dressier pieces. FPJ in particular.

I have the 5146g slate dial but already had 5167a when bought it.
Its lovely watch but if looking at resell then better off going for the 5167r and if have other dress watches then the 5167r is best choice

The 5146 will take a bigger hit when bought new than the 5167, after that though it'll hold its own. I wear mine in rotation regularly and it suits any occasion/ use (other than swimming!)
If I was going rise gold I wouldn't marry up with a rubber strap

i would only be able to get either pre-owned, so not sure if that makes any difference in comparing depreciation.
they both have their own positive attributes - which is to say, like them both.

the 5146 cuz i don't have an AC in the collection, and the WG with slate dial would be very versatile in different dress attire. other than the FPJ CB, the 5146 would be my only other dress watch on strap, as i'm trying to offload my reverso (to help fund one of these pieces).

the 5167R cuz, even though it's rose gold, there is a certain sense of under-the-radar that i really appreciate. also, i think the pairing would go well, a steel+colored gold set for each AP and PP: AP jumbo SS and 15450BA + PP 5712 SS and 5167R.

If you have the opportunity to get either at this time it's not a bad move, I recently enquired with my local AD and he has quoted now with a deposit it could stretch into 2020 for the 5167a. The price rise and scarcity of the 5711 have caused many to jump ship.

Both of these models for me work as they are very very understated unless you come into contact with a fellow WIS.

I vote for the 5167R. For me, I tend to wear sporty watches with bracelet or rubber strap more than dressy watches. The 5167R is more versatile, IMO.

who cares about the watch that holds it price better if you buy right; that being said pick the watch that you like letting the market influence but not dictate your decision.
5146 is a phenomenal watch , all you need to do is buy right. I prefer white dial than slate gray on gold the versions. For 5167 i would go SS, taking care of a gold bezel (Aqua or Nauti) is a pain, IMHO

Good luck

neither, if you’re going to be selling down the line then it’s just not a wise place to park tens of thousands of dollars

But between these two the non AC would be my choice

In this hobby parking big amounts of money is the norm , and flipping or selling is always on the table, regardless if you plan to do it or not.

this.
and whilst i am really interested in having either (both!) of these, i do know that it's an inevitability that something else will catch my intrigue down the line.
and without that elusive money tree in my backyard, selling/trading is an equal and complementary inevitability.

it's all part of the sickness that I'd imagine most of us are (happily) complicit in.

Oddly I wouldn’t buy a gold Aquanaut or a white gold 5146. Get the Aqua in steel or the 5146 in rose.
