Rolex Dealer - reasonable charges?

Hi and sorry if this post sounds like a newbie.. i am one

My father left me his rolex that was in the 1970s. It looks like it was barely worn, but i could tell it needed some cleaning / oil for the parts. It also had a few scratches. I decided on a rolex dealer to do this since it's now has sentimental value.

Here's their technical review/service quote:

watch 38 years old. oils are dry causing watch to lose time. watch never been serviced. gaskets dried. not waterproof in present condition. replacement value $5,750.

- factory movement service, complete dismantling, cleaning and oil $380
- additional parts (crystal replace, gaskets and bracelet spring bars $160
- crown and tube $85

total with taxes $712 with one year warranty for the complete overhaul. Is this normal?? thanks in advance!

Firstly, welcome to the forum, and congratulations on the watch

Sounds about right to be honest, but trust me, it'll be worth every penny. The RSC sends watches back as if they were fresh off the factory floor. It looks like they've replaced important parts that would have been worn from 30-odd years use, that's normal considering it hasn't been serviced during its life

What kind of Rolex? With some if not all vintage it is very impprtant for the value of the watch that the dial not be changed. I would recommend that you insist that they not change the dial.

Sounds about right to me works out less than $2 a year.

It is fair and will help to ensure the watch will be working for many more years.

Service by the RSC sounds reasonable.

You may be able to save a little if you use an independent watchmaker. TRF has a couple.

Welcome - and think of it this way you won't miss the watch while it's gone for service since you have not worn it (that's what I'm dreading) ... then you'll have a fantastic watch for many years to come :)

Yes, that seems about right. Expensive to someone new to watches and Rolexes particularly but I would be fine with that price for what you are getting.
