cool question. That was inflicted on the watch by my father. The exact impact I do not know.

From 1966-1973 he daily wore the watch and all of his various professions and activities gave plenty of opportunity for leaving their mark.

Merchant marines,
US Air Force mechanic
House construction in Hawaii
Paniolo on Parker Ranch in Hawaii (Cowboy)
Mate on Univ Hawaii research vessel
Big wave surfing
Fishing
Hunting
and then the watch survived his fatal automobile accident.

The watch now receives much more gentle care in its advanced age. 54 years old and counting.

My uncle recalls the original bracelet failing while surfing and my father being lucky to save the watch. He wore it on a strap after that.

My thanks to Weston J

Have been looking at different insert options especially the thicker font kissing 40 ones but decided it was important to keep a vintage correct Long 5 insert on the watch. Found a few old references to fat font Long 5 inserts but they don't seem to be that common.

This one came to my attention and I think a worthy addition to my dads watch. Thank you Weston for parting with this beauty and for an easy transaction.

Thanks for reviving this thread - it was a brilliant read! Amazing story and love the watch you've inherited from your dad (and the car is also amazing!).

Appreciated. Car is getting a bit of an update along with upgraded motor. Sorry to veer off watch topic but I guess its ok to hijack your own thread?

Beautiful car and a beautiful watch! Exquisite taste.

But I am curious about the movement. My apologies in advance if my reading of the 10 pages missed this. The pictures on the first page pretty clearly show a movement that has a base plate for a movement with a date wheel. There is even a yoke spring that's installed in place. So did this receive a movement transplant somewhere along the way?

I believe you are mistaking this movement to be one with the hacking feature, or another words one stamped with D (for Date) in then the movement serial number. What you think of as the "yoke spring" is actually part of the second wheel and a part of the movement base plate.

I might very well be, and I am only curious about this because learning the history of these movements is fascinating to me. But this is what I was referring to:

I thought I've seen the no-date main plates lacking the slots for the yoke and the spring, but I would defer to an expert on this.

EDIT: I thought this is what you would expect to see inside https://www.chrono-shop.net/en/calib...king-5500.html

Boy, am I ever late to this story...
I just spent a half hour reading through this and was captured from page one. Such a wonderful story and progression of the restoration process.
My hats off to you, it legacy and the work done to bring this watch back to its former glory. Along with the car, this was an awesome read of your life. Needless to say, the work by Mr. Ridley and LAWW is awesome.
Congratulations.
Superb..!!

73 tub. Full redo. Motor going in within the week. G50 transmission conversion. Custom interior. Motor will make 380hp in 2300 lb car. 6 lb/hp with 225 rear tires and no electronic controls. Should be fun.

It's a project that makes minimal sense. Labor of love that I plan on driving for next 30 years.

This was a great story. I love your watch and the family history. I am the first to own a Rolex in my family, I have one for each of my children that I will pass on to them. I hope they treasure my watches the way you treasure your dad's.

What a wonderful story about and tribute to your father. His watch was certainly precious to him, and present during not only the “highlights” of his life, but of dally living.

It is wonderful that you’ve restored the watch, and you are going to be creating your own memories with it.

Thanks for sharing!
