Should one keep their watch collection running at all times?
I am about to purchase a Yacht Master TT but I have another automatic (Seiko Kinetic) that I usually wear most of the time so that I don't have to reset it. (I also have two Citizen Eco drive watches that never stop.) This got me wondering... what are the pros and cons of letting a watch run down verses making sure that it never does?
I'm new to the forum but I did read where someone suggested that a member wear his watch for several weeks to see if just wearing it would make it keep better time. Do they just get gummed up through non use? |

Well I have a few mechanical watches (automatic and manual winding ones) and since I do not wear them all at the same time they do run out of power rather often. If anything, make sure you wind them about once a month to make sure the gears don't get gummed up as you say but otherwise it should be fine.
This is my opinion but I've never had an accuracy problem due to the fact that I wasn't wearing them.  EDIT: Really, where are my manners!? Welcome to TRF!

No to both questions...
If you do a search through the boards, you'll find many threads on the pros and cons of a winder. I'm in the camp of allowing your watch to run down and stop when not in use. Pointless to keep it running if you're not wearing it I think....Unless of course, you have a multi complication watch with moon phase and perpetual calender features which can be a pain to reset! Otherwise, it only takes 1 minute to reset and start a stopped watch, and for me, that's the joy of owning multiple pieces.....and part and parcel of an automatic watch! There are many who on the flip side say it's convenient to grab and go. Different strokes...... Do a search and decide what's best for you, but I say save that money and place it to-wards another piece in the future.

Even with winders you'll find some time-setting to do since there's always some drift by the time you get around to putting the 4th, 5th, 6th one on your wrist. And then we have these pesky unevenly numbered months to deal with.
 To the OP - not meaning to scare you - the addiction grows so plan on a big crib for all your incoming babies

I let my watches with quickset date run down, then reset them as required to wear them. My 1630 with the non-quickset date stays on the winder though. If for example the watch stopped with the date on 3, and its the 5th of the month, it takes forever to reset it.

To each there own, I like winders and without them would probably own 2 watches and be done with it.
I have white, gold, blue and black dial watches and sometimes change them before heading out in the evening from what i was wearing during the day. It would be a pain in the to have to wind and set my watch every time I reached for it.

I used to believe in winders. I just recently about 3 weeks ago went from a winder to just a plain, simple beautiful 6 watch case. It's actually a fun exercise to wind and set the watches again.

Contrary to Rob, Ken, and many others, I am in the winder camp, like John. I believe in keeping my watches wound at all times. I have 10 automatics and keep the ones I am not wearing on winders at all times.
But then all my watches have one or more complications, e.g., date and GMT. The one with the most complications, my Breitling Navitimer Olympus, is a PITA to reset when it stops. It has a semi-perpetual calendar (only needs resetting once every 4 years, plus moon phase. It takes at least 5 minutes to reset that puppy and it's no fun to do. I don't mind truing up the time, if it's off by a few minutes, but resetting dates and time zones is a real pain.

I keep about 11 watches on winders. I don't mind setting time and date from scratch but anything with a moon phase on up in complications I keep running. My perpetual calendar was set by the AD and I have no idea how to set it!
