One vote for Seiko over Rolex...

Grain of salt for sure on this one, but I do like the watch!

Seiko over Rolex?!?

You'd be hard pressed to find a watch as iconic as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner. Veteran of 11 James Bond movies, untold campaigns by Navy Frogmen, and Lindsay Lohan's wrist, this watch is the original gold standard for diving watches, even if you get the stainless steel version. Though it's a luxury item, the Submariner's immaculate in-house movement keeps it ticking for your grandkids and keeps its legendary resale value for pawn shop emergencies. But despite the long list of pros, it has one con. A big, fat $7,900 con.

For those of us who consider that con a deal-breaker, there's the Seiko SKX007K2. Like the Submariner, it's a self-winding automatic watch with hardened crystal capable of withstanding depths of 200 meters, and the very same iconic design language of its Swiss counterpart. Unlike the Submariner, the Seiko only costs $180.

While many people are wary of inexpensive automatic watches made outside of Switzerland, Seiko has a phenomenal reputation for precision even in its more economical lines. "It's a fully-pedigreed diver — made entirely in-house, no less — that punches way above its weight," says watch expert Adam Craniotes. Pictured above on a NATO strap, the original Rolex Submariner from Dr. No. Note the similarities? That exact one will set you back north of $500,000.

Know what else looks killer on a NATO strap? Yep, you guessed it.

With its luxury looks, it's easy to forget that these dive watches are actually tools designed for action and capable of withstanding pressures that would bust most watch cases. The reasonable price point coupled with killer construction makes the Seiko a hero of the diving industry — after all, losing a $180 watch to the depths sucks a whole lot less than losing an $8k one.

Little known fact: In the 1970s/80s Roger Moore era, James actually wore a digital Seiko in From Russia With Love, For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy. As Sean Connery demonstrates above however, the analog style will always be synonymous with Bond.

Thanks for the share guys! (I wrote the article.)

I remember someone telling me Seiko movements were the only non-Swiss ones they trusted. But even if the movement is just okay, this watch is awesome and it's a great way for a regular dude who doesn't have tons of cash to go automatic and appreciate some incredible mechanical engineering. . .

Pretty cool Ethan, glad to have you as a member on TRF were you a lurker before I posted this or is this your first foray into the TRF community?

Liked your piece, but after all this is a Rolex forum so our comments may side with our grail-manufacturer

Absolutely agree with Seiko being a quality piece and a great alternative to spending beaucoup dinero!!

Thanks guys! This is my first foray really—lurking through Google searches doesn't really count.

And of course, having said all those good things about Seiko, there's no mistake about whats on the pedestal here—that gorgeous Sub.

I'd be wary of the opinion of that "watch expert" cited in the article, though...

Wow, and you're a long standing member... too cool!!!

For my own edification are you a watchmaker, retailer, collector, all of the above? Sorry for my ignorance just snooping the "expert" credentials. Always wondered what makes a person a bonafide master of their field.

The Seiko SKX series are great watches. Another good feature about them is they can be modded till the cows come home I came close to picking up an SKX007 a few weeks ago but bought another Monster instead

Honestly, my only "credentials", if you will, are a life-long love of watches. Of course, it also helps that I write for iW Magazine, Gear Patrol, AskMen and a couple of more online and paper-based pubs, as well as moderate on Timezone and host a weekly GTG for NYC-based watch collectors. ;-)

Basically, I'm a legend in my own mind.

I have had many Seikos over the years and they had two things in common. I always enjoyed them and they never gave me any trouble.

Great watch for the price and I do wear mine from time to time, but it looses about 30 seconds a day consistently, even a few months after service. I own two of them and the other is worse at 45 seconds. Still tells time within a minute a day which isn't as bad as it seems and totally practical if you set it fast.

While I hold Rolex to be the one and true wristwatch, I do own an SKX009k2. You really can't beat it.

I do have to agree about the price though. Someone once said the Submariner is the best $2000 watch made and while that was a long time ago, it holds true. You do pay a premium for the rolexness of it all. I've owned probably 4 Subs over the years so I'm not complaining at all, it's just an observation. Omega does an in-house and quite innovative movement in their divers for quite a bit less than the Sub. It's all relative. Just glad I can enjoy these great watches.

I have a Seiko digital that JB wore in the movie.
It doesn't work anymore and, no surprise, Seiko can't fix it.
Another plus for Rolex?
