I bought this Tuna Can 300m 7549-7010 from a cool guy not long ago. But all I had in mine was to mod the already "legendary" diver. So here are some BEFORE mod pics:

So I sent it to DALTON TOLEDO of ABC Watchwerks to mod it:

1. Movement replaced with a SEIKO automatic movement and serviced
2. Sapphire double domed AR crystal
3. New crown
4. New bezel insert
5. New gaskets
6. Repolished case back and bezel
7. Sand blasted shroud
8. New hour and minute hand (original ones do not fit to the new movment)
9. Pressure tested

After it was back to me, I replaced the SEIKO Z22 band with an Ocean 7 band and with fat spring bars.

Have you ever thought about a military dial conversion? (You lose the date though...).

Yes I had thought of that before I decided. But again, I was leaning towards staying close to the original look. In fact, I did not ask to relume the dial, they are dead anyway. I was afraid that relume will look the "patina" look.

Also the original are painted markers and I have seen some vintage SEIKO divers, the owners sent for reluming and the markers(not the lume) are like popping up!

Hence, I had decided not to change the dial. However I have solved the problem of visibility if I use this watch for dives. I WILL SHINE A TORCH ON IT!

Looks Good. I have the same watch from new.It has done alot of work and now looking tired.Anyone out there know anywhere in SE Asia that could do the same refurb except the movement change.

Sorry I do not know any. But I was thinking the cost of shipping from Thailand to any SE Asia country differs from the cost of shipping from Thailand to US, it might be a little more. But at the end of the day, if I were you, I would send to someone who had done this job before or someone who is very well known.

Since you have this Tuna Can, it is worth the cost of giving it a good SPA treatment.

JMO.

Yes, but now the dial reads 'Quartz' while it contains an automatic movement

So if I remove the "quartz", maybe another chap will ask why not relume as well. There are guys who asked me why not install the current 300m Tuna Can's dial into it which does not has the word "quartz" and so on and on......etc.

It does not matter to me really. If an experience WIS craze guy sees it, he will in no time identifies that it houses an auto movement.

Or better still, if another guy who has this watch and walks up to me, he will sees my second hand moving like butter while his is ticking away!

After some weeks I've come to realize how cool your Tuna Can is. It has an auto movement and to a WIS it would be an amazement since it has a sleeper look. I used to have a 1977 Jag XJ6 with a Turbo'ed Chevy LS1 engine and 6 speed transmission which blew people's minds. Classy but with a hidden secret.

that is a beauy and a hwole new watch...but just this one thing kept bugging me...you have an auto movement now, so why does it say quartz on the dial?...m sorry m being picky but its much classier to have an auto so why have an inferior marking?..

its tough as rocks. that seiko :)

The movement is a SEIKO 17J 6309 automatic movement. The vintage Tuna Can 300m is a well known tool diver and its robust quartz movement. However I am not a quartz guy.

Yes it will look better to have the "quartz" got rid but then again I did not want to touch the patina look of the dial. Hence I leave it as it was.

I just purchased one of these watches off ebay moments ago and am interested in changing some things.

also can you give me some background to this watch why is it so desirable/rare?

I have had several seiko divers over the years but never this one.
I am excited to get it.
