What is considered "Vintage"

Like antiques, there has to a cutoff, for purposes if this forum, how old does your Rolex need to be to be considered Vintage?

How about condition? A lot of so called antiques are nothing but old junk.

My earliest Rolex is a 1986 TT Datejust, in very nice all original condition.

heaps of threads on this so please search them.

Quick through-line is majority of watches with a 4 digit reference / or 5 digit with matte dial would be considered "vintage" at this point. Depends who you ask

Someone was collecting a list of all the threads on this topic, usually there is at least one per month.

This question is definitely vintage.

However, we were all new to the passion at first. Nice to see everyone being kind and helpful. OP, there's a wealth of information here for you.

No, not if you've lost a leg climbing up the top sails.

They will all become vintage by their age no matter what features one or another have.

Sure figuratively speaking yes. In the year 2050, the 2005 ceramic bezel will be considered ‘vintage’ but not really is it?

The 1950-1980 vintage will be the true vintage given that’s when watches were in the initial strides and valuation should prevail, unless Matte dial automatic watches fall out of favour by then! Time will tell.

Here's an attempt at an answer, from Crown and Caliber website (https://www.crownandcaliber.com/pages/vintage-watches)

"Generally speaking, the market for vintage is on the rise, but there is no hard and fast rule as to what qualifies a watch as vintage. Some people think it is pre-1980, while others will argue that anything over 25 years old or 50 years old is vintage.

However, everyone can agree that a vintage watch comes with history. Each vintage piece will have patina from years of wear, and for many that means they are each unique and aged just right. This patina is highly sought after, which has ushered in an era of not refinishing these pieces leaving the character on them."

It seems that the best explaination would be that it has history, is unique, and somewhat sought after. Age seems to be of little importance but my qualifier would be that it's not longer made.

They gave the exact same answer as above in their first sentence

"but there is no hard and fast rule as to what qualifies a watch as vintage."
