preppers

ive been noticing quite a few videos on 'prepping' just lately, its not anything that people tend to do in england, it seems quite a movement out in north america, i have been quite fascinated at the belief that these people really think that their society is on the verge of collapse and they must make the necessary preperations,

is it more of a hobby type movement? or is it for real?

i hope they are wrong with their beliefs.

I get the feeling it’s a little of both maybe mild paranoia and the need for a hobby

I’m sure there’s some selective marketing on their parts. We’re easily influenced here in the west. And not always for the better

Not sure what drives it but I stopped hearing about doomsday prepping the minute I moved to South America.

Nobody here is prepared or is even worried about preparing anything unless it is happening within the hour.

this supposed 'collapse' according to them, seems to be coming in a variety of ways, but financial collapse seems about the most popular,

i am hearing lots about 'getting into silver and gold' stockpiling tins, water and fuel,
and becoming strong, fit, and ready to physically defend oneself,

As i say, i hope they are wrong, though they seem like nice enough people.

I get it if there actually was a threat of imminent collapse of our society.

It's nothing new. I've been hearing about folks like these for decades, only they used to be called 'survivalists'.

For perspective about life, all anyone needs to do is visit a cancer ward at any hospital. It will eliminate any anxiety or problems you think you have.

Prep for a hurricane or a weather event... the rest is well silly imo

This prepper fad comes and goes. There were other versions of it in the 30's, 50's, and 80's. The internet fans the flames easier these days, and companies have monetized the fear much more efficiently this go round, but the phenomena has been coming and going in the US for decades.

yes, a good post indeed,

mankind has been on the brink since it was conceived,

i read some philospher, who said the human condition is one of struggle,
that you are born in pain, and you spend your life in pain, maybe that was john lennon who said it, i forget now..

No, it’s really just a few people. Unfortunately people don’t understand history and folks have been predicting doomsday for thousands of years. Also gives people a sense of control, like kids turning on the light to watch for the monster in the closet.

The reality is if they paid attention to what can actually and statistically kill them like hypertension, diabetes, poor diet, quit tobacco, get regular exercise, good sleep, and wear seatbelts they would be much better at preventing their own individual death. Which of course it is easier for one to look at far off existential threats, rather than the stuff that can kill you more immediately.

I think it’s a hobby, and like most, it’s participants take it all too far. Aren’t DSSD wearers “prepping” for the day they go to the ocean floor? It’s just perspective.

It's usually a very specific type of person who believes that they need to prepare for the end which could come at any moment.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^WHAT THEY SAID!!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^

People have been stocking up for the apocalypse ever since they realized an apocalypse could happen. For those who are interested in it, it very much becomes a hobby, like watch collecting or restoring old cars or model building. You seek advice, what you can you DIY, you look for the best prices on equipment and when the zombies/Big-Flash/Gamma-Burst comes, it will all be useless or resupply the people who survive and take it from you.

I prep for a 3-5 day power or water loss, which has happened in various parts of our neighborhood due to storms or failing water mains.

Any prepping in the city is useless as a black swan event such as a volcanic eruption (Yellowstone) earthquake or EMP (what many preppers actually fear) simply puts the prepper in the position of being the one with the resources when stuff gets scarce.

Interestingly, my former brother in law ran the power distribution grid for British Columbia’s hydroelectric supply. They sold a whackload of power down into southern California. He said the delivery lines were so outdated and unreliable that it would take months, if not years, to restore supplies in the event a moderate quake happened to hit in the right spot. Cant imagine how that would impact a large urban area.

Usually batshit crazy.

To be fair, with unlimited resources I'd probably have some sweet bunker with all sorts of crazy stuff.

I have what I would need for weather related power outages. Canned soup, books and enough wine for a fortnight.

Its a hobby that gives people a sense of security and control. I wouldn't label myself a "prepper" but lets say there is a massive earthquake in CA and you dont have food, water and emergency services for a few days or even weeks Pays to be prepared. What happens when people start looting or breaking into houses to get food, water or valuables? Pays to be prepared. Again, I don't consider myself a "prepper" but all my friends say if there was ever a Zombie Apocalypse they are all headed to my house.
