Impressive to say the least, however that display would make my head hurt ... Less is more when it comes to retail display

Totally the opposite in Japan, where everyone is welcome and inspecting or trying on watches is common if not implored upon you. Had an excellent experience at Jackroad and numerous other shops at Nagano Broadway last week when I flew to Japan for a quick vacation.

Tldr, if you aren't a foreigner or speak Mandarin or look like you're from the Mainland, be prepared to have a somewhat cold reception. Oh and no discounts generally, none on SS and around 5-10% on PM or less desirable OPs.
Like you, I’ve been underwhelmed by most HK Rolex ADs - not so much snobbishness, more just complete lack of knowledge or enthusiasm for the product (helpful comments like “oh, hot model, no stock”). I have found a few exceptions, but they have been few and far between.

In contrast, most (not all, though!!) of the grey dealers I’ve visited have been accommodating, friendly, & enthusiastic about what they are selling... but popular models do tend to trade at a sizeable premium to list with them

Oh definitely WRT grey market dealers, they know they have stock even ADs don't have so better service is needed to sell the watch to their clients, especially when there's premium. Still would prefer to deal in Japan, as prices are generally cheaper so I've found.

How big is your wallet? Hong Kong isn't known for bargain prices.

You might be better off buying in your home country.

Hong Kong was a Rolex Paradise before prices were raised to be closer to taxed prices in other countries. They even used to advertise it. Here's an ad in a local tourist board handout from the 1980s.

I certainly see a lot of Rolexes in HK. It is not uncommon to see 2 or 3 on the wrists of passengers when riding subway.

Regarding availability.. used to see the SS sport models at ADs earlier this year, but as it got near the end of the year, there's less and less stock. Earlier in the year, I was able to try on the SubC ND at the HK airport AD.. and some grey market dealers were offering me 13% off the ND (new with Rolex AD stamp). But starting in September/October time frame, I stop seeing them. I assume that they will start getting stock again in the new year.. maybe..

If you like watches, HK is a fun place to be. Someone mentioned AP. There's 6 (SIX) boutiques within 4-5 miles from where I work. 1 factory run boutique and 5 privately owned boutiques. And there are a few more ADs. It is pretty crazy.. !

It's not a paradise if you cannot find the watch you want at ADs!

HK is a re-seller paradise instead.

I had to visit about 5 ADs to find an Explorer last week. The stock situation is pretty bad.

Upside: if you do find something, retail prices tend to be slightly below USA prices. And no headaches about VAT or sales tax.

i guess if you're coming from a country with very high VAT, it could be worth buying a gold/platinum piece in Hong Kong. Provided you wear it home and don't declare it.

I was at Hong Kong a few days ago, I've never seen that much Rolex ADs in my life, basically they're at every conners of the streets, I dropped in a few of them and SS sports were almost non-existed. Tudor AD is usually right next to Rolex AD which I didn't really care for.

On the other hand, I picked up a "MADE in Japan" Seiko Turtle PADI with cool boxes for pretty good deal. No kidding but even cashiers are wearing Rolex here in HK, I don't know how they could afford them. Seiko is harder to find

It's a shame places like these don't seem to exist anymore, or I don't know of any? Andorra in Europe maybe?
