Ruud Van Dummy

Yesterday, I did quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever done in my life.

I got called away Thursday night on an emergency job; I had to get from Singapore to Miri ‘right now’. Connecting flights were so tight it was hand luggage only. I had o fly up to KL only to fly all the way back down again and over to Borneo.

I get the job done all day Friday. I then went back to the boat yesterday morning for a ‘belt and braces’, visit then back to the hotel, gym, shower, pack and go.

I arrive at the airport and wander through security, no drama there. I reach the immigration counter, hand over my passport and the officer asks “can I see your boarding pass please, sir?”
Me: “Er.........”

Ruud Van Dumbass had forgotten to check in for his flight ! I actually went through security and up to immigration without checking in for my flight. Unbelievable.

When I went back through security the second time, one young lady security officer decided that she was designated comedian for the day and asked me about 87 times if I was sure I’d checked in this time. At least her colleagues had the courtesy to either stifle their hysterics with the palms of their hands or they turned away.

I’ve been flying around the globe with work for over thirty years and have flown more times than I could ever possibly recall. And yesterday I forgot to check in for my flight. How uniquely embarrassing!

For someone who is allegedly of reasonable intelligence, sometimes I haven’t got the common sense I was born with. Absolutely astonishing

I do not think it was so embarrassing in the stressed world we live in. On the other hand, it is under all criticism that you come through
the security check without a boarding pass.

Believe it or not we're 'snowed in' with 3cm of snow, so I thank you for making me laugh.

Thanks for not being too harsh, guys

I’ve just been talking to Mrs Van D over FaceTime. Some of you might recall she works in the airline industry and she’s absolutely mortified. As Jocke said, she was very concerned as to how I got through security with no boarding pass.

The only logical explanation, apart from thinking of another Panerai, was that I didn’t have any hold luggage to check in so I just forgot. Either that or I’m going senile

Makes sense to me. You’ve probably done it so often you just took your eye off the ball for a second. We’ve all probably done maybe not the exact same thing but many things very similar.

In the heat of the moment I can see how you can forget. Getting through security without a boarding pass is a different story.

A minor brain fart Paul. Nothing to get in a twist over.

I’m with your missus. How did they let you through security without a pass? Yikes.

That's what happens when you're rushed and get out of your routine. I travel a good bit for business and have an established "milk route." If I get out of that routine or someone throws a monkey wrench in there, I always forget something. Could be a piece of workout gear, gps, ezpass for tolls, something. It happens.

Wow, it's nice to suffer so few consequences for a gaff. Usually airport security ends up inheriting a new watch.

Glad it ended well. I think the more you do something, the more you can sometimes turn off your brain and go on "auto-pilot."

I went through customs at my destination (Harbin, China) without collecting my luggage from the carousel once. It was pretty easy to get back in, though.

You got through Miri airport security without a boarding pass!? I can't even get in to Miri without a passport, I reckon! In all fairness, I think your mind was tied up elsewhere since it was a hectic few days. That, plus the airport folks seems to have been taking things way too easy!
