To trust or not to trust

Hey Friends,
Happy Friday!
I need your opinion...
Buying a watch (in Germany) through Chrono 24 using Amex.
The funds are there but they are "verifying payment." To do this they want a photo of my DL and a copy of the front and back of the cc showing the first six and last four digits of the credit card. Yikes!
I'm quite reluctant to offer up my personal information, particularly when Amex tells me it's all squared away.
Amex folks tell me not to give them the DL or c/c picture.
Am I over reacting ?
Thanks.

Hmm I’ve never purchased through Chrono24, but this does sound a bit odd

I have purchased from Chrono24 using AMEX, sizable amount, but it was in the US and didn't have to provide copies of ID. I do not think I would go forward with this deal especially with it being oversees.

If 1st time purchase through C24 could be normal to prove card is yours and transaction is genuine.

Thanks for all the feedback-so, I'm not crazy.
That being said it is the first time using Chrono24- I wonder...
But still, the card should be good enough, otherwise whats the sense.

Tell them amex told you no. I've bought there before and didn't have to do that for $11,500.

It’s not unusual for merchants to request to see your driver’s license when using a credit card here in the US. Since they cannot see the card they asking for proof you actually have the card. This all sounds OK to me if you are dealing with reputable businesses.

Well, just got off the phone with C24.
Apparently first time buyers are asked (told) to submit the added stuff for security purposes.
Since C24 is reputable and some of the cc numbers are blanked out- I'm going to go ahead .
I hope this watch is worth it.
Have a terrific weekend everyone!
For the curious: Cartier Tank Americaine Chronoflex Chronograph- all gold.

Can we make buying a Rolex anymore complicated? Go to a store and buy one. If you can’t, get something else!

I don't care what C24 says. Listen to your CC.

Why is this up for debate?

If there is a doubt there is no doubt.

Go with what your gut and Amex are telling you.

I recently purchased my first Tudor and I really considered going through Chrono24 but I was nervous given the inability to find anything out about the various dealers. I decided to go through the only AD in Virginia Beach and though it was a lot more expensive I was a lot more comfortable with the transaction. It was in person, warranty is legit, paperwork for insurance is provided, the dealer has my info.....all in all just a smooth transaction and very little to worry about.

Quite often you purchase large value items here in uk and they want a second form of ID so I get it from the retailers point of view to protect themselves but I guess you have been advised by AMEX on what to do, discuss it with the seller

I’ve never been asked for ID when using my AMEX. Granted, they’ve all been in person transactions. I’d probably heed what AMEX says in this situation.

Online purchases or purchases over the phone I have been asked for the entire number and security code. Have yet to have a problem as I’ve only dealt with legit businesses.

I never use my debit card for anything besides grabbing some cash at the ATM. Even then I use a secondary checking account that’s not tied to my primary.

When I purchased my 16613lb I was asked for my DL. I gave it to them. It was in person and they were just verifying it was actually me. I don’t see an issue with that.

What perplexes me as of the last few years is I never have to sign when using CC and am very rarely asked for ID anymore. Seems the verification has gotten more lackadaisical even though scams have gone up significantly.

I see you’ve gone through with the purchase. Hopefully it all works out!! Congrats on your new watch.

I got nothing.

AD or trusted seller here on TRF are the only options I consider viable.

I don’t trust anyone. With very few exceptions that have proven themselves over time and through deed.

It’s sad. But I am a product of my environment.

Dr. House, is that you?

LOL, I'm not really disagreeing with you, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that most people are honest and trustworthy.

If folks would have read the entire thread before responding, they'd see that it was C24 who requested the info, and they seem to be doing due diligence to verify the buyer. No one wants a chargeback on the AMEX.

I'm sure the OP will be fine.
