YG DD40 Dial Question/Opinions Wanted

I’ve got my eye on picking up a YG DD40 in the first half of next year. It all depends on how some work/career stuff goes and if I (in my own opinion) earn the privilege of purchasing a PM watch.

So for the sake of this post...let’s assume I do. :-)

I’m having a hard time figuring out what dial I like best and it is not easy to see all of them in person. I’ve seen a couple of these in person but not all. The ones that catch my eye are the white dial (roman numeral), black diagonal motif, silver diagonal motif, and silver (roman numeral).

I’m a working professional in my early to mid 30’s and would want to wear the watch to work in business casual, for dressier occasions, but also on the weekend when rocking jeans and a t-shirt. The roman numerals are nice, but the illuminesence (sp?) of the stick dials is also a nice feature for the evening and as I grow older.

What are the thoughts here? Anything stand out as a “classic” choice or you think looks best? Also, in the current watch environment - what type of discount do you think would be reasonable on a DD? 10-15%?

I’m quite a bit younger than you (23) but I sprung for the Roman numeral and don’t think I can ever go back. It’s equally at home in casual situations which is how I wear it 99% of the time as it would be in the office.

I think you should decide the dial without caring about the dress or the situation. Maybe in a future you can buy a steel Rolex for more casual ambiance

I’ve had all of the dial colors. Habitual dial swapper! This past summer I swapped from champagne to a stick white dial. For me, it’s easier to tell time, and I liked the classic white color which matched the white day and date wheels, so it all blends together. I’ve always had 36mm Rolexes, so I don’t know how those other colors ‘show out’ in a 40.

In my opinion the romans on DD40 are something really special, if I would purchase a YG (I think it will not happen as that big piece of colored gold is too much for me) I would go for the silver with romans.
Regarding discount I would ask to DavidSW, based on my experience with him I asume you might get 20-25% from him. I can not speak of an US AD discount.

I have the same question. Its hard to choose a piece when you can't try them all on. Im leaning towards the white dial with romans. Its a watch that I'd keep forever and I'm wondering if I'd still want to wear diamonds 30 years from now. The stick dials look better on DJ 41 to me. Good Luck!

The white dial with romans does really pop - and I mean that in a good way. I guess I have to think about how big a deal is it to “read” at night. I mean, how often do I actually do that with my DJ or sub? And when I’m that old, don’t you go to sleep when it’s dark out? :-p

DavidSW is showing new DD’s for ~12-13% off of list so a good reference point I guess. Would be interesting to see if they or the AD would go higher. Though one nice thing about the AD purchase is that it *could* help with future SS pieces. I saw could, because one $30k watch doesn’t make one a big spender where I live.

Once you know what you want ask him for it, at least in my case it was something that he has not in his stock and he needed a few days to get it, the price was a bit better than the equivalents published on the web, but it might have changed on the last months...

the white dial is clean but when i was looking for a dd i felt like it was too plain for what a yg dd is supposed to be. i'd probably go with silver romans if you want romans or motif if sticks. if black then nothing beats the baguette dial imo

Jomashop has the white dial 11% off and black with diamonds 17% off. Decisions, Decisions I Would try to get your AD to beat that price and leverage for future SS purchases as mentioned above

On that model I would first go with the champagne stick. For Romans, I would do the silver.

I tried the 36mm and since I own a sub and DJ41 the 36mm felt just too small.

Interesting to see the comments on the silver dial roman numerals...I’ll have to see if I can find one in person to check out.

Yeah...I think I’m starting to lean towards that white dial. It’s super clean and the roman numerals add that little extra flash....

Still have time to decide, thanks for the input!

Beautiful combo with yellow gold! I wish I had a skin tone for yellow but rose honestly looks way better on me

Here’s my DD with the white dial. I avoided the Roman Numerals because I wanted a little less flashy.

Had the same choice a few years ago

I ended up going with this. Still love it till this day as the dial dances in different lighting. It was a very very very hard decision for me as well.

Goodluck they are all stunning in their own way and you know what if after 1-2 years you want a change RSC will do it anyway for you :)

White roman dial is my fave for YG. The gold Roman's will stand out on the dial and will go well with the gold of the watch. I'm a roman numeral fan for a DJ as well although when it comes to a DD I'll be in the WG camp if I pull that trigger. Good luck for everything working out for you and Happy Choosing....

I like the two silver dials, with a slight edge to the roman numerals. I owned the silver motif, and the legibility wasn't great. Not that that is a big deal, but it would be enough for me to give the nod to the romans.

As far as classic, forget that and focus in on what you want.

Discounts are a thing of the past, my friend. If you're talking about expectations, I would go into the negotiations with your dealer with a ball park price of what they're going for on the secondary marker, then see what he can do for you.

Good luck,

If I could answer this question I’d have gotten a DD several years ago.
I’m not a flipper and I want to one and done the Day Date.
Good luck in the search!
I will add not to discount the 36mm version. It makes a more subtle statement than the 40 and I think that’s the way I’ll go. I went back to 36mm on one of my watches in rotation and the size is fine on me and my 7 1/2” wrist. I can carry off an IWC big pilot, 47mm Panerai, etc. but that’s not the statement I’m looking to make in a yellow gold piece. YMMV. But the older you get the more you appreciate subtlety. Something to think about.
