Royal Oak 15500 vs 15400

Is the bezel actually thinner on the 15500? That’s been mentioned twice here...

Never saw a 15400 in the flesh before but i love my 15500. What's not to like? Better date placement, newer movement, better proportions.

Can't go wrong with either though since everything is subjective

I think folks are referring to the bezel around the case back. Since the 15400 uses a much smaller movement, AP uses a thick bezel to hide the empty space around the movement.

Also with an upgraded better movement, why settle for less??

15500 any day. Bigger better movement, better date placement, and missing the silly word automatic.

I have handled the 15400 several times and have only seen videos and pictures of the 15500. My plan is to own one of these some day. While I would wait until I saw the 15500 in the metal, I do like the 15400 more at this point. My reasons, aesthetic really:

Prefer automatic on the dial, the current one looks to large and empty

Prefer the index markers on the 15400 more elegant on a still sporty watch

Prefer the engraved rotor on the 15400. The rotor on the 15500 does a much better job showcasing the movement, but I just love the Audemars and Piguet family crests on the 15400

Looking forward to holding the 15500 some day though and then who knows. BTW my dial choice is silver.

The larger lettering/logo does it for me, the dial is nicer when you see them together I think it’s pretty different. Of course the movement on the 15500 is better

Didn’t mind the date position or the word “Automatic” but I never liked the hour markers on 15400. Much prefer the new dial. No pictures comparing the back yet? The tiny movement looked terrible to me.

Was the rotor engraved? I’m sure it wasn’t. The new rotor is a significant improvement for me.

The proportions on 500 is weird vs 400. If compared to 202 or 300, is even weirder.

15500 all the way. Prefer the more modern cleaner look. Looking at the 15400 reminds me to get the 15202 instead. In terms of color, I prefer the monochromatic look of the grey vs the coveted blue.

definitely the 15500. Perhaps the current dial vs the 15400 may split opinion as many are used to the 'automatic' and minute markers on the dial as opposed to the absence of the 'automatic' and the minute markers on a chapter ring. But if you look at the caseback, there is no doubt that the new movement is simply stunning. Take a loupe and view the finish and you'll be mesmerized by the polish and finish at every angle imaginable.
