Looking for some advice - 5970p or 5270p ?

I've really become set on a my first chronograph perpetual...I'm trying to decide if I should go for the 5270P-001 salmon dial or the 5970P-001 black dial.

for some background...I own a 5170G black dial so I "crossed" the 5070 vs 5170 debate...but find myself at it again with 5970 vs 5270. I own a 3940 series 1 as a vintage piece so that helped me get comfortable with the 5170 as I though about balancing my collection with new and old.

Some of my other thinking is as follows...

5270P
-absolutely love the salmon dial colour !!
-I think legibility is better
-I prefer to be the first and only owner
-Assume it will be discontinued soon so should fair decent for next generation.
-I'm kinda worried about the 41mm size, I have a smaller wrist
- Chin problem solved, but was never a thing for me
-I can not stop starring at pics on-line...

5970P
-already a classic, already an investment for next generation
-40mm instead of 41mm
-great movement, no longer made
-beautiful watch !!
-I find my 5170G black dial on occasion hard to read, worried about the same on 5970P
-I can not stop starring at pics on-line...

I would appreciate thoughts and advice from the forum as I think thru this fun 'problem'... thank you in advance.

Both insane pieces. I love the Salmon dial, a timeless simply stunning. and of course there seems to have been some softening of prices, so definitely an opportunity to bag yourself a well priced piece, given there seems to be a decent amount on offer. But... if you look at the lineage of the 5970P, 3970, 5270 etc. This one, the 5970P is a keeper for life. I love the case size. The dimensions are perfect for every ocassion. Probably more difficult to source, but if you manage to, its the grail piece. Happy decision making, either way you cannot go wrong!

i went through the same choice option but ended with a 5271p. I loved the 5970p but ultimately the size would not work for me. It may be 40mm but due to the large concave bezel and dial size, the watch actually wears more like a 37-38mm (wears smaller than a 5170 imo) which meant it was not going to work for me. If the size doesn't matter, the 5970 is the way to go. i recently got offered one a 180k usd and its overall the better watch. Sub dials centred, last of the lemania movement, geneva seal and large slow beating balance.

I’ve tried the 5270P on and it’s amazing. But...whilst I would buy one if I had the cash, the truth is that it wore a bit big for my 6.5” wrists. If you have smallish wrists go 5970. If your wrist is 7” or bigger, go 5270.

The 5270p would be my choice . It’s my grail and I like it better than the 5970p for the case shape, salmon dial , blackened hand set, legibility . My heart skips a beat when I see it. I have a 6.75 inch wrist and was concerned about 41mm size but when I tried it on, it fit perfectly and was well-balanced.

I was recently offered a 5271P as well, one with diamonds. Which version is yours?

If you’ve held them both in your hand you’d know immediately

I passed on 5270p personally after it arrived and bought a 5970p

I have both 5970P.001 and 5270P.001
for heritage 5970
for my own aesthetics: 5270P love the salmon and it's MUCH more legible.
I have 6.5" flat top wrist the 41mm is fine.
5970, like another poster mentioned, while measures 40mm, it wears like 37-38mm, smaller than my 5146P

What did your heart say?

I had a chance to get a 5970g or 5270g first series before.

More collectors told me to get 5970g because of the same things you mentioned in your post but I followed my heart and chose 5270g.

Based on your post, I think your heart longs for 5270P.

Great choice to have and you have technical pluses and minuses, so really comes down to which piece sings most to you on the wrist.

Close call. Probably 5970P wins by a hair due to value retention and high collectability, discontinued and limited supply and an overall nicer, more balanced dial.

I'd also have a look at the 3970P. The dial looks much more balanced than the one of the 5970.

I would pick 5970p over 5270p. Agree with some of the size comments. On my 6.5 wrist the 5970 works great. I also have 5070P, 5170G and 5370P so a variety of sizes. Only the 5004p felt too small for me. Of the ones above I pick the 5970p 90% of the time

Agree with earlier statement that you should try both and the decision should be made for you

for both size reasons and that I have a 3940 (that I love!)...I am looking at the 5970 and 5270.

thank you.

I would definitely go with the 5970P. Legibility is a real issue and should not dismiss this difference. Even without that-- would still go for the 5970P -- love the salmon dial.

Prefer balance of 5970. That will not change over time.

I went 5270p. Prefer the salmon dial as well as the larger size. Can't do the chin either. Note I have larger wrists.

Will be collectable in the future but admittedly that isn't my primary concern.

In the age of access to limitless resources, technical specs, pictures and videos, while the simple in hand / on wrist comparison is so elusive with sought after pieces.

I agree with the above / 5 minutes on the wrist is the most meaningful in terms of making the decision

Ps, I found local watch meetups to be a great resource for getting to see rare pieces in person.

I do agree it's tough to try them all on...the salmon really didn't work for me at all but I know lots of people love it

While the 5970 does wear a bit smaller, I find it to be a terrific piece and one of the favs in my collection.

5270 v 5970?? Talk about Sophie's Choice!

Congratulations on the position you're in. That's awesome - good for you. As you know, you'll likely be happier if you make this decision with your heart. If, on the other hand, you're looking at this strictly as an investment piece - the 5970P should be your choice. Folks on the thread have covered the why.

If I were you, here are the factors I'd be weighing:

- which feels more balanced on my wrist (and only you can answer this one)
- which watch works with different attire. To me, all black cannot be argued with. Salmon stretches less...to me.
- The complicated subdials vs. the punchouts. I prefer the complicated subdials of the 5970P.
- Desire for warmth: the 5970P feels a bit cold as it's monochromatic, and the 5270 just looks so approachable.

If it were me...I prefer the 5970G (white dial) as I think that just looks truly perfect. Assuming that doesn't interest you; I think I'd still lean 5970P. The dial is cleaner to me, the case size more appealing to my 6.5'' wrists, I prefer batons to numerals, the font of the subdials, and the watch is just more flexible in terms of dress.

How are you enjoying your 5170? That will be my first Patek, but am raising funds and debating metals and dial config.

this would be ideal but I guess your name is not eric clapton - salmon dial beats the better and more balanced dial in my opinion.

agreed. sound advice...I'm working to try them both on... a little challenging in these no travel, no get together COVID times...but trying to make it happen.

+1 to 5970G ahead of both Ps and 5970P ahead of 5270P.
