50 Years of the Classic Submariner

The fascination with the brand goes back some 40 years to when I was a pre teen reading Ian Fleming. Pretty much have some love for all Rolex models, but over the years the Submariner has always been the one. Doing a little reminiscing here as a forum member is flying in on Friday to purchase my birth year gilt Submariner.

It is hard to argue with the perfection of the classic Sub that has now covered some 60+ years in a very similar configuration. To me it is a tool watch but is also a simple work of art.

Nothing new here as many share the same view of the Submariner. Guess I am having some mixed feelings about letting the gilt go...

A thread is worthless without pics, so some crappy phone pics

Thanks for all the nice comments. Certainly have mixed feelings about selling the gilt. I have had at least 20 Subs over the last 30 years of wearing Rolex. As much as I love the vintage Subs, the modern version suits my lifestyle perfectly. Somewhat funny as I hated the "maxi" case when it first came out. I remember telling my friends I would never own a 6 digit model...I currently have 2 6 digit Subs. LOL Never say never

I just do not wear the gilt enough to justify the expense. Keeping it locked in a safe and insured is just a waste of a nice watch. Going to a great member who will wear it and enjoy it.

Tough to sell the gilt beauty but better to send it to a good home and the flyer sounds like he will.

Fantastic post Mark and great shots of your 5513. I've always admired it but I understand your reluctance to hold on to it, especially if you're not wearing it.

Sir, I salute your intelligence on all accounts !

Clarity !

And yes...if I had to keep Only ONE watch, it would have to be a Rolex diver in SS... As for me, Nothing...absolutely Nothing comes close !!!

The gilt sub just kills it.......well done. Do not ever sell that watch.....those are my thoughts, I think you can justify all you want but there's a high possibility of regret with this one imo.

If by some tragedy I had to sell all of them and keep only one, it'd be a sub.

I love the modern Subs too. Great watches. I only wish the band tapered a little more like the SD43.

The gilt is lovely, but I absolutely respect (and understand) your thinking. The 6 digits are unbeatable in my opinion.

Beautiful 5513. Six digits Sub is not for me but I value its undeniable qualities and respect its icon status. Maybe the next Sub will be more to my liking, I'd be very curious to see what changes Rolex will come up with, if any. Hoping it won't look like the SD43 as I like some differentiation.

Love your meters first gilt 5513 Mark I hope the new owner shares some pics once in a while as well. I understand you aren't feeling it anymore. Not easy to let go of something you love but don't use much. I'm glad you found happiness with 6 digit.

Tough decision to sell but if your not wearing it I do think it's the right one.
Although not in the same league I sold my 16710 Coke about 14 months ago for the same reason.

Very good comments and I could not agree more. I started with Rolex, and watches, with a Submariner and have been all over the line-up over the years. Only to return to my first love, The Submariner. I prefer the six digit modern models but also have owned the five digit models before the modern Rolexes were available.

I was going to post asking if you were crazy selling it but it sounds like you've got it all worked out.

I can't imagine ever desiring the maxi case sub but after reading your post it kind of makes me wonder whether one day I might.

Good luck with selling it.
