Thoughts on the SD 43

I had the pleasure to try on the watch test at an AD where it had already been sold but not picked up. At the time I was wearing my 16600 COMEX. My initial thoughts are this. It is MUCH better proportioned than the DSSD. The bracelet with the better tapering is a big difference. The bezel is HUGE and thats where you see the size difference. It seems thicker than either the 16600 or the 116600. The dial is great and i do like both the cyclops and the red printing. It def would be a nice daily wearer and seems more practical than the DSSD. HOWEVER...it does really seem more like a "Super Sub" than a Sea Dweller. I can't explain why but it does. I was more excited for it before trying it on than i was after. If given a choice between it and a D Blue I would be hard pressed bec the dial of the D Blue is so much different than anything else in the line up. Overall I still think the "King" of the SD's is the 16600 rather than the new oversized sub. Just my .02

I think it's completely due to the cyclops - and I'm a fan of the cyclops. But I get that one of the things people thought was "special" about the deep sea and sea dweller models was the absence of the cyclops lens. I'm still torn on it. I find the cyclops extremely useful for daily wear but on the other hand not having it differentiated it from the other divers.

my thoughts exactly. Overall it is better proportioned than the DSSD as the OP noted.
Without the cyclops i would prefer it the the DSSD in every way. With it, I like it less than the DSSD but slightly more than a sub.

Nothing wrong with the enhanced dive watches in the Rolex collection, and the new version is certainly a beauty, but I'm perfectly content with my 14060m; it is all the diver I need.

Concur with that, Jack! Having the 14060m takes away any possible lust I would have for any other Rolex diver.

If you think the SD43 is a "super sub" are you recommending it as preferable to the ceramic Submariner?

The SD43 has all the attributes of a Sea-Dweller and just one added extra for free...the cyclops.

If the SD43 was the same as other Sea-Dwellers then there would be no point to its production. Go deeper than the aesthetics and you will find a totally new movement. That is something that tends to escape the cosmetic eye.

The Cyclops ruined it for me. It looks like an upsized sub. I'll stick with my 16600.

I had the opportunity to try on the SD 43 today at my local AD. The watch was offered to me for purchase (no discount of course) and I have some time to decide. The watch is beautiful, proportions seem just right. I actually like the cyclops and dial has somewhat of a matte finish to it. The pricing was attractive, comsidering what people are asking for it on the secondary market. Not sure why I didn't pull the trigger on it , guess I like it but just don't 'love' it.

I, I, I'm just too tired for any more Sub-c43 talk.

I like it but found it too heavy and bulky for my comfort.

I'm having a hard time understanding the furor over the new Sea Dweller. To my untrained sensibilities, it looks like we have a choice between a moderately sized Sub and a thick Sub with one line of red lettering and an extremely thick Sub with no magnifier.

It's a great addition to the diver line up

Some will like it , some won't.

+1 , the sea dweller looks gorgeous and all but is it really worth the extra 4-5k when all you're getting is gas escape valve, bigger/heavier case and slightly different movement with bezel markings. I haven't had the chance to try one of these on yet but the sub seems to be the perfect size.

So you didn't need to be on a list for opportunity?

No I did not. Just have a good relationship with the AD.

It is for me since I can't wear a Sub and it look right. I love my DSSD, but also just got the new SD43 and it is possibly the perfect watch for me. Everyone is different, in opinions and in size.

For XL wrist it's a great option to have. As a dive watch for normal size wrist, it's weight might be a liability. Only time will tell how it works out for an every day watch. I don't believe it will scratch the popularity of the Sub at all but none of the SD's has done.

If you're a hard-core diver with a large wrist and want to make a statement, would you buy a Ploprof, DSSD or SD43??

Well, I'd say you've said it all.
