Just saw this thread, as old as it is.

Here are my first two Rolexes. The one on the left was my very first, purchased in about 2001.

I have seen many discussions regarding a Datejust vs. Sub. I have to say that unless you are a serious diver, why would you go with a Sub ?? The DJ has the same movement, is tested to 100M which is probably enough for 99% of us, wears as a 36mm but looks much bigger on the wrist and IMO with the Jubilee and Fluted Bezel is a great all purpose watch. The Sub looks pretty bulky on most people and is pretty thick. I saw a co-worker with one recently and it did not look good with the suit. Finally, there is a split majority with half going with the oyster bracelet and the other jubilee. I think the jubilee is a better choice especially those like me that are hard on their watches. It shows virtually no scratches and looks great all the time. Just my 2 cents....

You can customize it with either roulette or all black date numbers. I wanted all black and my AD had to order it in. Any idea of how much discount you guys got from your AD? just curious if I got a good deal or i should have haggled a bit more (I got 25% plus tax 13% in canada)

I have seen the DJII but I much dont like the wider hour markers, I want stick type hour markers but the ones on the DJII I have seen look a bit big compared to the more elegant stick markers on the DJ...
I presume a DJII would hold its value better as its a new model but do they cost a vast amount more than a normal DJ ?
I keep looking at a SS datejust with smooth bezel and blue or black stick dial but I cant decide... they are both about £2000 and I wont get chance to see one in the flesh as I only have access to mail order ones and we dont have a Rolex dealer near us... They seem a low price though at about £2000 used for SS or TT with Blue or Black stick dial... I was wondering how much they are new as well (the DJ and the DJII) I have searched for ages on the net but cant find any info on new prices here in the UK...
I might even treat myself to a new one if I can decide which is going to be the best bet long term.

Get the jubilee bracelet with either smooth/fluted bezel black dial with "indicies" my ad corrected me not "sticks" semi sassy -- its ok we are kinda freinds since i buy so many things there... even got 25% off!

Here's one I've got en route. It's a 15000. I agree that the DateJust to me is a watch which meets most of my needs as a Rolex better than the Submariner. For a Rolex it is more elegant and beautifully sculpted. To me the Submariner looks like the work watch which it was designed to be. Even as an all gold watch it is hard for me to look past the work watch form. Obviously most on the forum here disagree since I would estimate it as the most popular watch given the plethora of sub related pictures and threads. It also fits better in with the current culture of watch worship with bigger being better.

I basically agree, but purchased my Sub to replace an Air King that was stolen because I felt I "needed" something that flew a little lower under the radar and/or to wear with my usual more casual wear that would clash with my DJ.Also, everyone seemed to have a Sub, and wanting to separate from the crowd...

(There:three rationalizations-all equally suspect).

But now that I'm a Sub owner, I understand why they're so popular and always will be.

I want to change my watch dial with diamond to some new colour dial like black, brown etc.

Is it possible to change and what should be price in exchange of old dial.

I am planning on purchasing my 1st Rolex in the upcoming weeks and I am coming to this forum for some opinions and hopefully some pictures to help me decide what to get. I have my mind pretty set on a Date Just, just because this is one that I always wanted since I started working. This is a pretty big purchase so I have a ton of questions and just trying to get some insight from you guys.

I currently have a Tag Carrera with a black bezel and face, so I am looking for a watch with a little different look that I can wear casual and formal.
I know I want a DJ with a fluted bezel and a jubilee bracelet. The other specs I am up in the air with, so I am hoping with some pictures and opinions from people who have a DJ, I can make a decision.

What I definitely want:
DJ 36mm
Fluted Bezel
Jubilee Bracelete

Undecided options:
1. Silver or Two Tone? (I am leaning more towards Silver)
a. Which is a better resale value or hold its value better?
b. Is TT to “old fashion”? I am a 30 yr old guy and would like something more trendy and fashionable, but at the same time eloquent. I hear the TT might look to "old".

2. Diamond dial or plain dials? (I am leaning more towards Diamond)
a. How are the quality diamonds in the Rolex?
b. I see on alanfurman.com they have both a Rolex Factory Diamond & a Custom Diamond setting (which is about $500 less)
c. Is this to tacky? I looked around the site only see only a few people with diamond dials.
3. Color of face. (Leaning more towards silver)
a. Silver – sharp looking and simple. I heard this gives it a better pop, especially if I have diamond dials.
b. White – different look and can match with a lot of different color outfits. Hard to see the time?
c. Gold – looks good on the TT, not sure how it will look on a Silver.

Also, I am located in NYC so my options of purchasing the watch would be the Rolex store, Tourneau, authorized Rolex dealers and some online stores like alanfurman.com.
Any benefits of purchasing at the Rolex store or Tourneau? I hear they are usually overpriced vs. AD.
There seems to be a ton of AD’s around NY. Does anyone recommend any?
Any other reputable websites I should consider?

Any opinions or pictures would be great.
