Icon17 The Full Moon!

Well, this is a bit better attempt than my previous one 29 1/2 days ago!

I had to hand hold the camera, so not nearly as steady as I would have liked.....could have been much clearer.

Looks great!
U can easily shoot the moon handheld without any worries about camera shake.
Think about it... the moon is very very bright and it requires almost no time to leave it's mark on the camera sensor.
Here is one I took last night.
Settings: Handheld, 300mm, F/5.6, 1/1000 second.

Great pix indeed. The moon last night and the night before was spectacular! Huge in the sky and quite low.

Well, thanks for advice Chip - once I get myself a DSLR, maybe I can do it as easily as you can hand held. Since I don't have one, I improvise....

That picture was taken using the Bushnell spotting scope that I use when doing this to see my arrows in the target from 90 meters away:

This picture is me shooting at 30 meters so no scope needed.

I held the lens of my digital point and shoot up to the eye piece of the scope, tried to hold as still as possible, and then snapped the picture. The picture in my original post was when the moon was quite low in the sky and not very bright, so I went back out with two tripods this time - one for the scope and one for the camera. Getting it all lined up was not easy, but this was the result - quite a bit clearer:

The moon was still quite low in the sky for this one, but I have another picture that I have to resize that I took about 1.5 hours later when the moon was out of the atmospheric haze....I'll post it when I get home from work. It is much better than these two and was taken when the moon was bright enough to cut the exposure time down considerably.

Thanks Craig - that picture (and those that followed) were inspired by a great drive with my wife under the open sky in the Z4 last night around 8:30 PM. We were on our way home from a dinner party put on by my financial planner, and as we rolled through the twisty roads with the top down and the fog streaming over the car, the moon was shining brightly in the sky. I decided to capture the feeling by getting some moon shots.

Sorry to disappoint......

Like that second shot Al seems to have worked fine, try
cropping your other better image first, then resize it.

Hmmmm, not sure what you mean. That image was not cropped at all, just resized - it's full frame just like that from the camera. If I was going to crop it, I would do that before resizing the picture to get the most detail.

On the image you have not posted yet,if it a large picture size crop your image first with your software. To make the important main subject in your picture the moon, to stand out, after that then resize it.My fish started as around 2000X1240 cropped it down to highlight the fish first then resized to around 700X something.

I'm interested in that the moon in Al's shot is pretty much at the same angle as Chip's shot, but the two pix were taken about 1,500 miles apart on the same night.

Should there be a difference in angle. I realize 1,500 miles is a speck compared to how far away the moon is from the earth, but just wondered.

Last night, the moon was the brightest it has been so far in 2006.
If the smoke doesn't make it hazy, i might try a shot tonight.
I think the B&W mode might make the contrast a bit better?

Although a great shot, Al....I think the one of the sexy Z4 with its top down, the sinister fog and beautiful Jacqui in that car would have been a much better one!!

Agree fully with JJ on that one, Al. Both are beautiful - but Jacqui is the best!

You are a lucky man!
