Anyone move from 5164a --> 5164r?

Thinking of making that switch myself. Curious what your thoughts are and in particular if you can still pull off the brown dial/strap with a suit. Thanks!

Both references are awesome, but different. While the A can be a nice fit even for a walk around the park with shorts, I believe the R calls for more dressed up environments - not necessarily to the point of becoming a 'dress watch', but more to the elegant side than the A. Tough decision... I would probably stick to the A just because I think at the price point of the R I would prefer a classier watch on leather strap.

I did see steel and rose gold 5167 side by side andthe rose gold looks better than the pictures. Since you are asking, you hv the budget for it and therefore I would do so. I was personally considering to update from 5167 to 5164, in steel though but did not make my mind yet.

IMO the 5164a looks better than 5164r. I think the 5167r looks better than the 5167a.

I like both the Aquas in SS more, strange for me to say.

I just saw the 5164r in person and it is quite nice.
I do prefer the SS though. More casual.

I just added the 5164r and am happy I did.

I loved the 5164a but traded it a year or two ago for no good reason. In retrospect, I prefer the 5164r and am satisfied with the decision. I don't find it too dressy, but I am very comfortable with PM watches.

It's a nice middle ground for me. Not as sporty as say a RM, but also not as dressy as a 5131r.

I agree with this. I think the 5164R is the way to go. It is stunning.

thanks for your feedback ... I am thinking that the 5164r fits in between my 5712 and my daytona C on the dressy // casual spectrum. I like watches on a leather strap, but gravitate towards ones that can get wet...

I agree that the r looks better in person than in the pictures. It wasnt until I saw a 5164r in the metal a few weeks ago that I started to think about this

interesting that you feel that way ... is it that you feel that the r does better without complications? I seem to recall that you had a 5164a and indicated that you wanted one in precious metal ... any more insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

I can see that - its a total sport watch and adding the rose gold changes that profile. Appreciate your candor.

I agree that the SS version is more casual ... but it somehow works with a suit as well. thats my biggest question as I use my 5164a when I travel (which is a lot). If i swapped it for the rose gold, would it still work with a suit OK?

thanks for your feedback and especially since you went the SS --> rose gold route and have no regrets. I think it would serve a nice middle ground, do you wear it with a suit or do you reserve the 5131 for that?

thanks for the encouragement ... how have you liked your 5167r? does it get a lot of wrist time with your terrific roster?

I wear a little more my 5712, but it comes in second place before the AP CE diver and the 5711, it is a very cool watch, and I saw the 5164 in real it is stunning, while when I saw the 5164 it left me rather cold

Prefer the 5164 in steel over gold as the globe-date and larger size and pushers I feel work better in SS. The 5167 looks sweet in RG though. The cleaner dial brings out the color better.

Not sure, I wear my 5167R with jeans and tshirt most of the time, and I think it looks great, sure in a bathing suit some might find it strange but even with shorts it's fine

Has anyone tried putting the 5164/5167R on the black tropical strap from the steel versions ? In theory that would dress it up a bit for wear with a suit but equally I can see it might clash with the brown globe dial. Difficult to tell from pics.

Pulled the trigger. It must have been meant to be as I unboxed it and slipped it on at precisely 10:09am.

A few thoughts:
Love the weight
The rose gold isn't as dark as I thought
The brown dial is awesome
The brown strap is lovely in person
The watch is much nicer in the metal than on photos.

Congrats John and excellent choice. These RG Nauts need to be seen in person to truly appreciate. The dials are amazing and the RG case is such a stunner. Love the trio of watches you have

Great choice John, I loved the 5164R when I saw it, while when I was looking for a 5712 in the Paris Salon the only "sports" watch they had to propose me was the 5164 and I really didn't feel anything, I did have the urge for a new watch but understood I would flip it quite rapidly, while the RG Aquanauts are great, have a little wow effect, but are still quite under the radar, haven't caught even a single look at mine, and yes impossible to catch the beauty on pics. Great trio you have, if you added an AP ROO it would be even more awesome, but even like that I love what you have
