4 line gilt 5512 submariner

Hello-A while back-I acquired a 1966 5512 sub from the original owner... I am a novice watch guy and didnt know what I had; -till I started doing some research and seems it is quite rare; a 4 line gloss gilt dial chronometer...I have done nothing to it-except replace with correct new crystal..It runs excellent-but I dont know service history......Question; Am i possibly harming the movement by occasionally running the watch without service? Where would a good place to service the watch be? Also-the dial appears original and looks good to naked eye-definitely not real bad-lettering is ok-but under a loupe the entire dial shows surface crazing/cracking.....Does the crazed dial diminish the collector value? The hands are ok-but do show some corrosion...Any advice? thanks!..

Welcome to TRF Rick,

You do have a rare piece. The crazed dial is valuable and any changes will dramatically affect the value..

This one needs professional care....

You have a Rolex Service Center in Dallas....Call them and ask for references of watchmakers who will oil your watch.. Do not send it to them..

Another Source if you want it properly restored is Bob Ridley..Contact him here:

And make sure they don't replace the dial, as is their want, if they'll even service it (they don't always support vintage pieces)

You're right to check up here and on other vintage forums before you send it out. Try http://www.vintagerolexforum.com/ too. Some pictures would be good.

:)

Welcome to TRF!

Great find! Congrats!

Another suggestion for an (independant) RSC would be the RSC San Francisco. They would probably be happy to fix it and leave the dial and hands alone at your request.

Please post some pics of your 5513!

Hi Rick,

Welcome and congrats on a rare bird indeed. Condition is always uppermost on any vintage piece, but if original and decent you're in 5 figures. A watch like that needs the proper service and UNDERSTANDING of what it is by the watchmaker doing the work.

I would follow Larry's suggestion and contact Bob Ridley. He's done some great work for collectors and understands what these pieces are all about.

Hi guys.

I need help identifying this unusual crazed dial phenomena. Here is a picture of my GMT. Ever since I got it years ago, I noticed that it had some cracking. Is that what everyone is talking about? Please pardon the condition of the watch, I need to get it serviced and if it's actually a collectors item, I'll retire it and pick up another.

Sorry about the size of the image, I wanted to make sure I got the cracks visible in the image.

hi snapster
nice GMT you have there, one thing that looks out of place is the white gold surrounds.that vintage watch shouldn't have them,if I'm not mistaken.I'm sure other members will chime in soon.

Looks to me, from that pic at least, that the 'crazing' is on the crystal, not the dial. Looks like a polish would fix that.

etp095, good eye! i don't believe the dial has been replaced. it certainly hasn't since i received the watch as a gift 8 years ago from my father. he picked it up on the pre-owned market so i don't know the history however if this cracked dial is actually a replacement, i'd be really surprised. i have the boxes/paperwork at the house so I can get a serial number later.

pwrslider - thanks for the warm reception man. i don't think the dial has been replaced but i could be wrong. i'll get a serial number later today so i can cross reference it on the GMT FAQ.

juneja, good point buddy. i couldn't find any polish around the house so i just used some toothpaste. kinda silly but it works. here's what it looks like now.
