Any problems with this 1601?

I’m looking to purchase my first Rolex. I’m considering the one below. Do any problems stand out with it?

Thank you for this wonderful forum.

Nice fat boy dial and hands. Looks authentic to me! A couple of the lugs look a little thin and I see some corrosion in the case, but if the price is right then it would make a great first Rolex.

To me 2 x things stand out. First the case looks very new ( might have been brushed recently ) Second the date wheel is to FAT. This is probably a build or a fake.
We need more pics and a picture of the movement.

Interesting. I'd definitely like to hear more.

Below are more pictures from the listing. I don't have the rep to post a link, plus I don't want to give the dealer a bad name unless there is consensus here.

The lugs look a little thinned, but also looks like some brush marks, as already stated. The dial really pops on this watch.

Thanks for the responses. The dealer is up front that the case shows signs of polishing.

Does anyone else have an opinion on the date wheel?

All indications are that this dealer is trustworthy but I've been warned about the world of rebuilt Rolexes so I want to be as sure as I can be.

Watch looks good. The dealer is petty pretty solid also...only thing as others mentioned is really the case...but the old datejusts started out with thinner lugs so susceptible to thinning from polishing. I love that dial a lot.

It's a nice watch. Don't let some random guy on a watch forum put you off a watch over a 100 dollar date wheel. Probably less than 5% of vintage Rolex are 'original' Don't go down that rabbit hole, chasing what a watch was 40 years ago is a fool's errand.

the watch pictured looks great and for it's age is in fantastic shape. buy it right and slap on a decent jubilee and you're good to go!

Even for an early DJ, if the bracelet pins are sticking out through the side of the watch, you’re pretty much on the limit of the future polishing potential – now look at the top right lug

Just below that point, where the case meets the bezel, it looks like significant corrosion

It is what it is – if you like it, go for it – but look at the whole watch, not just the dial ……

Don't quite understand your assumption that because the font is "fat" on the date wheel makes the watch a build or fake.

Datejusts and Rolex in general has the longest history of different font sizes, texts, text positions, etc. I've seen multiple examples of "fatter" text on datejusts. It's probably consistant with the age and era of the watch.

--------

To the OP: What year? or whats the approx. serial number of the watch?

The piece is beautiful especially with the wideboy hands. Don't forget the Datejusts in particular were meant to be a piece that shines and dress up during the 60s and 70s. Light polishing / polishing in general was very common back then. I won't worry too much about it unless it has significantly worn (lugs) or badly polished.

I think I've seen these pictures before and judging by fellow members comments, the dealer/seller should be reputable.

Movement looks great! Like brand new, the May 17 service guys did a great job. I see the underside of the lugs have some damage as well. This goes with the territory. Looks to be the real Macoy, but buy the seller first.

Iím the OP and the dealerís communication was great... until it wasnít. He went dark for a week with two emails unanswered. I was ready to negotiate a price. Oh well.

Good news is Hodinkee popped up yesterday with a 1601 and it was just what Iím looking for - so I snagged it. It arrives today!

I was worried that 36 would be too small for my 7+ inch wrist but it wears great and I wouldn't change a thing.
