How I lost my Red Sub; a cautionary tale
Ok so I didn't really lose it; it snapped off my wrist while I was coaching little league soccer tonight.
I had been noticing the link which connects the last link to the clasp was worn thin. Tonight, it finally gave out. See pics. Luckily, I was standing in a grassy field and I noticed it slip off...it just fell right off my wrist. It goes to show that, although these are made to be worn, the parts wear and will fail. Wow, that's pretty scary. Glad to hear that the watch did not sustain any significant damage.

That's definitely an eye opener...couldn't have happened in a better place I suppose...glad it wasn't lost and everything can be fixed

That's exactly the same place mine gave way. It is the weakest link in the bracelet. The previous owner of my Sub must have tried to repair it but to no avail. When I first picked it up it was broken, so I made a better thicker link and that was fine. However I asked the dealer to use a Rolex approved link and was told no way. Either buy a new clasp or a new bracelet.
I bought a new bracelet. So other owners should make note and keep a close eye on this link. |

Quite a cautionary tale. Whilst we all love the idea of wearing the original vintage bracelet, many are beyond their optimal functional lifespan. My watchmaker routinely takes macro shots of the connectors and clasp prongs of my old 7206s or 9315s to evaluate for possible failure points. Sometimes these can be laser welded, but often not.
