Need some advice here,

My 1968 stainless steel 5513 only comes out at the weekends and I noticed that its looking dull, it came with a polishing cloth but I'm uncertain of what its impregnated with and I'm reluctant to take metal polish or other cleaning materials to it in fear of causing damage, so whats the heads up? is there a safe wipe over cloth to make it brilliant again with causing damage to it?

The only thing you should be using on your 5513 is Polywatch occasionally for the crystal. I would leave the rest of the watch alone.

If you are really not happy with how it looks, you might consider getting a vintage refinish from from one of the reputable repair shops. You can check the vintage forum for recommendations.

Don't overthink it. Wash it with dishwashing liquid and dry it with a clean microfibre cloth, it' ll look fresh

Do NOTHING other than clean. Leave the polishing (IF YOU MUST) to a pro. Been there done that..

If you use a polishing cloth or paste on any brushed finish it will definitely change its appearance drastically.

If you don’t know the existing polishing cloth’s chemistry, try it out on something like SS flatwear- perhaps a butter knife. That way you’ll be able to compare what reaction it has.

Your Sub has some areas that are polished, and some that are brushed. The same cloth wouldn’t be a good idea for both areas.
Some people have used a scotchbrite for the brushed areas to remove dullness while retaining a brushed appearance. And then used a cape cod cloth for the polished edges.

This takes some practice - so go carefully if you decide to try it.

I'm gonna conservatively recommend a Course Grit Belt Sander...and don't be afraid to really bare down to get out all the gunk!

don't touch it with that polishing cloth anymore than you would put lemon pledge on your Chippendale. And certainly don't refinish it... ditto with the Chippendale.

I wouldn't recommend that you polish that piece by yourself, although I don't believe that a polishing cloth or a 3m could do much of anything damage for an experienced person. Just wash out with dish soap and wipe with microfiber cloth as others of suggested! Enjoy beautiful piece !!!

A couple of drops of Dawn in an ultra sonic cleaner for the bracelet, a wash of the watch with soapy watch (check that the crown is secured), rinse both with distilled water, dry with a nice micro fiber cloth. Wait as many years as possible before polishing. Use those years looking for experienced professional with a proven track record polish it. Many a polish job has been regretted.

sure thing Adam, it was fully serviced and checked by Rolex 2012, I didn't fully submerge it in water more of a gentle wipe over with slightly soggy lint free cloth, and then dried again with a lint free cloth, no polishing involved
