I've given it a lot of effort and it took some time. To me: the maxi case does look great with the ss bracelet, but not with anything else as the lugs appear disproportionate. The 5 digit looks really great on a leather or rubber strap. So apparently I've come to the conclusion I have to have one of each :)

Yeah, Rolex is smart. So you always need both the old and the new!

I’m an old school type and for many years hated the maxi cased watches - they looked blocky and out of proportion. Now I have two maxi ceramics - a no date Sub and a BLNR and I’m a lover of both old and new. The maxis don’t photograph well and, when a long stretch of bracelet is included in the shot it emphasises the disproportionate blockiness of the case. On the wrist it’s a different story. The blockiness is less emphasised as the bracelet curves elegantly around the wrist. Rolex have definitely pulled something off here. A design that looks masculine and has some wrist presence without being too chunky and preserving the traditional look of the brand.

I had a hard time deciding if I should sell my 16610 to get a 116610 since I could not afford both. Ending up getting the 116610ln and couldn't be happier. I don't think it looks as big in person as it does in pictures of close up wrist shots.

I just bought a 114060, and really dig it. Definitely made the right decision. I love this watch and have no regrets.

However, I did try on a blue dial 40mm Yachtmaster, and I liked that a lot as well.

If the sub came with the same case size as the 40mm YM, I wouldn't complain.

Actually, either way is fine for me.

I prefer the MAXI.

Both these pieces have since been replaced by the LVc and BLNR.

Love the 6 digit case. Bold and masculine. Strapping on a 5 digit almost feels small.

I like my 116710.

I'm wearing it now.

I still like my 14060M and my 114270 and I always will.

Nope. Can’t get over the lack of chamfered edges and the lugs.

I don’t like the maxi case but I do like the glidelock bracelet.

From a design point of view, I liked the maxi case, bought a sub date and then after wearing it for a while realized this was about the most uncomfortable Rolex i had ever owned. The edges felt too sharp, just didn’t feel right. I still do like the design they really feel like a ‘tool’ watch, but those lugs are just too wide and too sharp.

Also not a great photo; the 14060 is on Nato as it's easy to swap bracelet to strap on it. The perspective isn't very good for showing the difference. I felt the 14060 wore more comfortably.

I tried a couple (Hulk and 114060). The maxi case doesn't appeal to me much. I can see why people might like it as it gives a more muscular look to make up for its smal size for a sports watch (by modern standards). However, to me pesonally it detracts from the overall elegance of the piece.

I'm a convert, I tried the new sub when it came out and didn't like it due to the fact I'm a big vintage fan, over time it's grown on me and now I think it's perfect, still has all the character of a submariner with a more robust look, put my money where my mouth is in December.

Hated the maxi case...........until I tried it on.

It's a great package - modern, chunky, substantial, masculine. Tall order to modernize a classic, but Rolex has pulled it off very very well.

It’s like any other prestigious brand that makes design changes to their classic models - the traditionalists harrumph and talk about how much better the older style was; the newer customers still see it as the Rolex (or BMW or Gucci) which they have always coveted and embrace they new version.

It’s only on this website that people dissect lug tapering, power reserves or font sizes, the rest of the world just enjoys the watch.
