a truly fabulous story. I enjoy reading these and the "I'm gonna pay fair market value to Mom..... uh, $200k? I think i'll sell it....." is truly priceless. I'm subscribing to this thread. I have to know how it ends. Good luck!

A Moderator would have to change the title for you. Your original post is locked out to changes after X number of hours.

Since you are new, there are limitations to your account until your post count increases, your posts have to be approved by a moderator so they will take a bit longer to show up.

BTW, fantastic heirloom and I hope it brings your mother a stress free retirement for years to come.

I'd not have it serviced. It won't affect the value and you avoid the risk of it getting ruined in some regard.

Wow what a story. For as much as you would like to keep the watch I’m sure 200k+ is virtually impossible to turn down. Have you looked at the modern Milgauss varieties? They’re quite stunning watches. Maybe with the proceeds (maybe 2-3% lol) you could buy one in memory of your father to wear and enjoy.

Almost lost for words on this one . What a story & amazingly the watch has sat in the drawer ,almost forgotten about for a 1/4 of a century . This is the stuff dreams are made of ,and I wish you & family the best of luck in achieving the most money you can by selling the watch . Please keep us all updated on your progress .

Unbelievable story! Very interested to follow this one! Very honourable of you to sell it on your mother's behalf.

Back the early 60s my father was a toll collector he soon worked his way up the chain basically working for the state most his adult life. right around 65 he was promoted to management probably why he bought the watch (a little gift to himself ) He retired early in his late 50s when the state did away with the tolls in 1989 and died of cancer within a year . Prior to working for the state he worked at colt's firearms he was the guy that would fix ( fine tune/ file ) a new gun if it failed its final inspection. He said many times , he loved his job at colts just because of the satisfaction of fixing the guns and how such a small tolerance would make the difference between a gun working perfect and not working at all, but there was no real money to be made working for colts.
My Father always said buy the best you won't be disappointed. The guy could fix anything and i quote "you can fix anything with a little knowledge and the right tools" .. and he could fix/make anything, so skilled with his hand. he loved the early porsche 356s always had one in the garage .always bought them beat to hell and then made them beautiful.

Regards Ned

as for buying a tribute rolex... i was thinking that seeing as the band currently on the watch was not original to the watch and the new owner will want the original band put back on the watch. i may possibly look into keeping the replacement( non-original band that currently adorns the watch) and possibly putting that band on a used ss blue submariner if it will fit. just thinking out loud, it all depends on how the final deal is hammered out. but for now i'm not touching anything.

My father and his best friend both purchased a milgauss 6541 the same exact watch at the local jewelry store. ..( my guess after doing some research today
got to love google) the Milgauss line was discontinued by 1965 so the Rolex probably was on sale. after all it was already 5 years old and still sitting on the jewelry store shelf. My father liked quality not flashy . so this watch was perfect for him .
My father’s friends wife made his friend return his watch

Ouch! Sending this thread to my wife before my next big purchase that she doesn't understand. Think it'll work?

Awesome watch . Even better history :)
Full setter to boot. Rare isn't the word. They discontinued these after a few years production .

Sell it to a well respected dealer and get mum whatever she needs and wants it's a sum she can enjoy .

Good luck and all the best for you and your family.

What a find...sounds like this is a similar story to this gentleman who brought his Rolex in to be appraised and ended up being gobsmacked at it's worth.

Check it out....and congratulations.

My two 6541s were both within 70 numbers of your dad's watch, and one within 15 numbers...

Milgauss update
This has been a very busy week assisting my mother's with getting her finances in order and exploring my father top drawer. (that hasn't been thoroughly gone through in over 25 years) . well i'm happy to say that drawer exploration turned up a few unexpected items mom was unaware of .
Given these new finding the watch won't be sold at this time . we stored it away in a safety deposit box .. it will be used as an insurance policy, sold when and if needed.

i just want to thank everyone for all the great advice this forum is such a wealth of knowledge not to mention, archived history .

if i could share a little advice

Today there are checks and balances for everything. its next to impossible to lose an investment, its all digital
back in the day things were simply on paper. take your time going through old papers (especially if it says save on it) you may be surprised with what you find.

if any one is interested in a seeing more pictures i set up a link

but it wont let me post it it says i don't post enough yet

Kind regards Ned
