Sub 16800 Patina
Gents,
Mind shining a bit of light on this peice. The patina is a gorgeous on the dial and hands just unsure if the dial has water damage or just age...your thoughts are appreciated. |

So many of those early gloss dials age badly, whether they're Sub Dates, or SDs, or even the late 5513s. You can get weird mottling, spidering, uneven matte spots, etc .... I wouldn't assume it's water damage, unless there's other evidence, e.g. in the movement.
Regardless, I'd still pass. Damage is damage. It's a shame because that tritium does indeed have nice patina. |

Do you have more pics OP? I've seen much worse dials so depending on the price I think I'd consider this one.

It can be the angle, but the right lug at 12 o'clock bothers me more than the dial. I think Aaron is right and I'd pass as well.

Went back
Taking another look. Really couldn’t see much difference in the two lugs...maybe my finger was blocking. Pros?

Unless it's a bargain I would go for another similar. IMHO the matte dial configuration of the 16800 is much better and won't crack like the glossy dials from later production years (I don't buy this "spider dial" BS).

Seeing these new pics only confirms to me the top right lug is thin.

Where for 6k?? I'll buy it right now... Not only the patina is nice but the dial I love the spider or star spots
And even turns matte, adds to the history of rolex and are collectible... These watches sell easily for 8.5 to 9k... Hard to tell though in the bottom if those are brownish rust spots if so then yes slight water damage, have them open up the 3035 movement if everything ok... Take pics in the angle of the lug holes and that will tell us a story if it's thin or just an illusion... If you're not interested let me know and I'll take it... Crown and caliber,Hqmilton and so forth sells these watches easily 9 to 10k and they write beautiful spider patina or starry night patina and sell quick... I rest my case...https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=627373 This one is 60k....https://www.hqmilton.com/timepieces/...gilt-dial-A950 35k...https://www.hqmilton.com/timepieces/...line-dial-A713 Should i keep linking them? |

But you buy the yellowing patina and ghost bezels? Rolex considers that damage also... The spider/stars/matte is part of history showing rolex formula for the gloss dial didnt go as planned... Only certain years did that and is part of rolex history and is considered collectible... AND GUESS what they sell like hotcakes... And i bet you 10 years from now they will be worth alot of money...

The price at 6K is very worth it to me at least for this watch, if buyer do not mind the slight damage or imperfection. It is a good buy for sure and some added characteristic to it. |

Are they the same watch? One has the white gold surrounds and the other does not. Apologies if the thread switched Subs...

This bring back to the basic saying, if you like it, buy it and wear it in good health. Many a times i feel that only perfect watches are deemed as buy-able but it is great to have a watch with character to it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as long as you like it. No one else have a say. I would also say life is too short so i do weird stuffs sometimes.

At this point the only thing holding me back is the concern of the top right lug. It sure didn’t look like t was an issue in person, but might actually be as I am no expert.
