Tropical Daytona
Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and would love to hear everyone's thoughts on tropical vintage watches, especially the daytonas (6263, 6265, 6239 etc.). Is it considered a special piece if the subdials on silver dial daytonas have turned brown or when black dials turn brown etc.? To me they looked very nice when I recently tried on a 6263 with tropical subdials. In fact I am considering to purchase it (I know the condition of the watch is very important as well) but I would really like to know how people view tropical on vintage watches.
Thank you!! |

Some “tropical dials” are desirable, simply because of the colour contrast – others not so much, especially if the dial is unevenly damaged - and “tropical” does mean damaged
Some unscrupulous people will put a dial in the oven to try to replicate the effect, occasionally “over cooking” the dial and effectively killing it – be careful out there, it’s a jungle Another point to consider, is that the colours may look good now – but will they stay that way in the years to come ?, or continue to deteriorate ? Ultimately, it becomes a matter of personal taste – but it’s your money, so it’s your call ……. |
