Three watch trade in for a Patek 5119j?

Would you trade in a Jaeger MUT Moon, Reverso TT1931 and Geophysique? I don't wear them. Am I nuts?

I wouldn't make that trade. If you don't wear them, you're much better off to sell them.

Patek lists for $19,700. My 3 could get 6K each .

I would not do that deal. A mint condition complete set 5119j should be able to be bought for under 14k today and you might even find an AD somewhere willing to sell you a new one for 2k more that that. Not a strongly priced reference these days, but it's a beautiful timeless Calatrava.

5119 can be had for about 12-14 so no that's a bad deal

I'd add more and get a 5227.

3 dress watches you don't wear and going to add something dressier? Take the 18K and consider something else. Just my 2cents

Although JLC makes great watches and are very respected in the watch industry, a Patek Calatrava is at a different level. If you like the 5119J, I would go ahead and sell your JLCs and get the Calatrava.

I may pull the trigger on Saturday. The AD that I deal with is eminently fair. Thanks for the advice all. Will update.

Is it a fair trade? Looking at it from a purely monetary standpoint, it would depend on condition, metal, and specific models of your JLCs.

Assuming yours are stainless, mint with b/p, against a Calatrava new from AD - then it's a reasonable trade IMO.

$6k each for your preowned JLCs is a generous offer from an AD. He's making his profit on the new Patek at MSRP, as he won't make much on the resale of your watches.
As others have stated, the 5119 can be purchased preowned at a significant discount, but if buying new from and AD is your goal then I'd say go for it!

The 5119j is terrific, although personally I'd pay a little more and get the 5120j if I was looking for a classic dress watch. The 240 movmt is a thing of beauty.

Thanks, Tony64. I may or may not get 6K/watch, but I expect a discount on the Patek and I don't think I will have to put much cash in the deal. My watches are steel and in great condition.

I looked at the 5120, but I prefer the sub second dial on the 5119. Lets you know it's running.

I was faced with a similar decision a few years back SK, but opted for the 5120 instead. I get the need that many have to see movement on the dial, but don't underestimate the zen tranquility the 5120 brings. Nothing extraneous on the dial, a dress watch in its purest form. Still not convinced?
Flip it over...

Also don't forget that the cal 215 that powers the 5119 was designed for a 33mm case. It's a reliable workhorse movement, but gets a little lost in the larger cases...

Beautiful. Can you post a pic of the front, too?

The 215 movement (which looks great in the 7041R) is the only thing that holds me back from getting a 5196R; however, with the angled caseback of the 5119 it looks appropriate to me.

I wouldn't trade those watches.

I agree with the poster above who prefers the model w/ no second hand. My personal favourite Calatrava is the 5196G FWIW.

Eh I'd do it. Not because the Patek is so great but because the others are what they are. You're getting a really good value on your trade in but unfortunately you are trading against a fully priced watch. At the end of the day you get a quintessential watch, I'd do it.

Agreed. You're trading watches you never wear for something you really want. At the end of the day we all (most) take a bath on this hobby. Buy what you'd enjoy.

Excellent advice. Painfully honest, but pragmatic.

I would keep the JLC moon as your dress watch , then sell or trade the other two and add cash and get a 5167 \
IMHO

If you're going to wear the Patek, sure.

Personally, I don't really wear dress watches, so I'd hestitate to have so much money in one piece I'd rarely wear. I agree with Jorge, and would keep the MUT moon as my one classic piece, and move the other JLCs for sportier watches.

I like the traditional Calatrava. I find the silver hands on the light face of the JLC MUT Moon difficult to read.

I am not a big Aquanaut fan. I have 4 Rolex sports watches, a Speedy, IWC Mark 18, a bunch of Seiko divers. I could outfit a Boy Scout troop in sports watches. So I am going formal.

But thank you for the new ideas!
