I had to revive this old post on DJs, which still give that great feel of a vintage Rolex without breaking the bank (for now). I noticed while searching for this new acquisition _ an untouched 5-mil. version from about 1977 _ that the excellent examples are becoming harder and harder to find. So many are polished to death. Also, the prices are climbing, of course! This is a photo courtesy of LAWW, where it went for a spa treatment.

This is a product of Montres Carver, living proof that idle hands are the devils workshop. I decided I wanted to take the hobby a step further and become able to do dial changes and other cosmetics and making this MM would be my test bed.

I got the 1601 case from a friend, the 1570 movement on ebay and the dial from a place I found on the internet. I already had the 1600 bezel. I bought a new stem and a factory SS crown which is yet to be installed. The hands are aftermarket and the source of all evil as you will see in a bit. I love roulette date wheels and found one of those as well.

Watchmaking isn't easy. Even low level stuff like this. I truly wish I'd counted how many times I had the dial on and off, I would guess 50. For a rank amateur getting the date wheel set and functioning was daunting. Which brings us to my failure point, the hands.

This watch is a set of hands away from being functional. I've spent hours trying to set them, I bought a slew of tools for that purpose and simply couldn't get it done. I decided to source as set of used factory hands and see if it was the fit of the AM hands that was stopping me. I was so frustrated I decided to take a break first, that was over a year ago. I'm going to get the factory hands, give it another try and if I can't get it done off to the watchmaker it goes.

I would never gotten as far as I did without the help of a friend, he knows who he is and I m grateful. Need a bezel changed, I'm your man! :)

[QUOTE=jvo300;2671207]Here's my 1603 Roman dial. I don't wear it much these days, but it always brings a smile to my face.

Very nice "Buckley" dial on your DATEJUST.

The datejusts don't get much love around here, well not as much as the SS sports models, but I think they can look just as beautiful as any other vintage watches.

I simply love this one - it's pure simplicity - and it looks great with a suit.
Nice DATEJUST. . . and, as you mentioned, they work great as a dress watch.

1985 Rolex Datejust Model #16030 - What is it worth today?

Hey Rolex aficionados!

Here is a 1985 Rolex Datejust Model #16030.
Features:
- Stainless Steel
- Serial #8191552
- Displaying a Grey Dial
- Fluted Bezel
- Jubilee Style Bracelet

This belong to my neighbor whose late husband left it to her to sell. The official appraisal is valued at $5,595. I'm having difficulty selling it at a fair price to her. Does anyone have a more accurate asking price I should use?

Feeling some DJ love today so it's 1625 time. I bought this one in 2014 with a fresh service. It was serviced by RSC in 2006 and received a new mid case at that time. People bitch about replacement cases but I don't mind, it's a factory fresh 1968 Rolex, what's not to love? If you want to know what a brand new '68 1625 looks like, there it is. :)

The 1625 has some differences from a standard 1601, etal, dial diameter, case and I tried to fit a glass case back and it wouldn't work! The case back has the original serial number engraved and the 44 number engraved just below it. I'm enjoying the new case more than I imagined I would, it's fascinating to have a new '68 watch!

This watch has TT end links fitted which gives it a finished look on a strap.

Should I buy vintage Date 1500?

Good Day Rolex fellows

I currently own a 38 DateJust Navy which I bought 2014.

last night I saw this piece, the asking price was 1300 USD.
not sure about the condition and whether it has any paperwork, box etc..

Please advise if it is worth buying this one. I did some research and I believe it's called Date 1500.

PS . I hardly use my current DateJust, but the price point which got me interested in this vintage piece.

I'm new to the Rolex Forums, but I have a vintage Datejust that was handed down to me by my dad. The bracelet is missing, but the watch is still running well. Can anyone help me ID this watch? The info between the lugs is pretty scratched, but I think it says it's a 1601 made in 1972. Beyond that, I have some questions: 1) Is this a "gray linen" dial? 2) Is this stainless steel or is there some white gold? (I can read the words "stainless steel" on the case, but I wasn't sure if that meant the whole thing is stainless steel.) 3) Does it look like anything's been replaced? 4) Finally — I'd love to know the rough value. No worries if it's not that valuable — I'll be more comfortable wearing it! Thanks in advance...

It is a linen dial but looks more silver in the pic. The watch has what looks to be an original crystal so a service may be impending, 600-1000US. The bezel is white gold the rest is SS.

It's a nice looking watch condition wise. Plan for a a service and wear it! There are dozens of 1601 for sale to get an idea of value but I will say if the serial number isn't legible it takes a big hit in value.

Thanks for the help, Richard! The serial numbers would be quite legible with a loupe, I believe, but are hard to make out with the naked eye. What would cause them to be worn out like that? For many years it was consistently worn on a leather strap. Every few years my dad would have it serviced at a Rolex dealer in Taipei. Was it the rubbing of the leather, or from overpolishing?

When I get the new strap — should it be 19mm or 20mm? I'm finding conflicting info.

Also, my dad says he thinks the crown (pictured here) is a fake — is there any way to tell?

This is surprisingly fun... and pardon the picture of my peeling fingertips...

A tribute to Rolex engineering

My dad's 1977 16014. Worn daily in rain, hail and shine. I inherited it and wore it daily for the last 5 years treating it with little care. Then one day smashed it into bitumen road. That made me realise the sentimental value of this watch. Got the watch repaired and serviced. Unfortunately watchmaker removed the lume on the hands when cleaning them! There is also corrosion on the edge of the dial due to a hairline crack on the crystal.

Questions:
1. Will the corrosion get worse even with a new crystal and new gaskets?
2. Can the dial be restored? or better to leave as is?

Now treating the watch with better care!

Lugs are 20mm. Watches that spend a lot of time in the sea can develop corrosion between the lugs as well as under the bezel and the gasket channel. Pics would be helpful. You should not get this watch wet until you can get it pressure tested.
