My first rolex! DateJust vs air king date?

Hello everyone
Iv been saveing for my first rolex for months now and are ready to buy one I think, I know I want the 34mm size but are torn between two, a steel and white gold DateJust (1990) or a steel air king date (1969).
My question is (without sounding stupid) what is the difference in the watches? There both auto and have the date so that's as far as my knowledge go's, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

The AKD doesn't have the quickest feature....In other words, you'll have to move the hands around the dial to change the date when setting the watch.

I was just reading about that on another topic, on here thanks! Do you think it's a big deal? Do you think it's worth spending a little more and getting the datejust?

Yep, the perpetual date (not datejust) is 34mm a 1501 or 1503 I think for 1969.

Go with the 60s version imho. Send Pics!

No, Rehabraver, not a big deal....Had an AKD 5700 for several years....Part of a rotation and didn't get much wrist time. Got rid of it because of it's size (too small). Cool thing about it though, not many around. DJ's are everywhere.

Stronarms, I think that is what I like about it the smaller size, I only have a wrist size of 6.5 inch. Now I am torn between two! IMG_4616.jpgIMG_4615.jpg

Rehabraver, had the blue dial....Brings back memories....Those were some good times. Actually had people comment on it, even more than any Sub I've ever owned.

I didn't even know there was an AK Date!

How different is it than the 1500?

From my knowledge the akd 5700 was only available in the U.K. And the commonwealth, I don't know if the movement is different :/

The Air King Date (5700 and 5701) is an interesting watch and I would love to own one, likewise the Explorer Date, which had the same ref number and dial font. Datejusts are ten a penny by comparison.

AKD is rarer, worth consideration provided the dial is not scratched, stained or otherwise aged badly.

Quickset feature of the DJ is nice but not essential. Might be slightly easier to get the DJ serviced when needed.

You should also look closely at the bracelet condition of both specific examples.

Hope you enjoy what you settle on (both good models)!

Hi, all thanks for all your help and information, Iv gone for the datejust, it was my first love and and only came across the air king date, when I was shown one.
My datejust is from the same year I was born, so its just that bit more special.

The air king date is a lovely watch, I love the smaller size compared to the justdate, also that oyster strap was very nice, it was hard to put it down.

To me it looked in exilent condition, it had a beautiful silver face with a fabric pattern on it, it was from 1969 and looked good as new.
Sadly I don't know enough yet to know if it all was all original, I wanted an all original model, so I went with the datejust as it was full set (box, paper work, tag) I feel my watch is all original.
