Phillips Just Announced: The OTHER Paul Newman Coming To Sale!

Phillips Auction House just announced the other Paul Newman is coming for sale in NYC December 12 2020.

From Phillips:

Auction Alert - On Saturday 12 December, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo will offer one of the world's most important Rolex watches - Paul Newman's 'Big Red' Rolex Cosmograph Daytona - in RACING PULSE, our upcoming Flagship New York watch auction. Estimated in excess of $1 million, Paul Newman received this watch from Joanne Woodward for their 25th wedding anniversary in 1983. It is the wristwatch Paul Newman was most often photographed wearing for approximately 25 years until he gifted it to his daughter, Clea Newman Soderlund in 2008. Treasured by Clean since then it remains remarkably well preserved with it's engraved case back displaying the incredible and loving inscription 'Drive slowly Joanne' Bearing all the features of one of the most sought after wristwatches of the present era, it is being offered with it's original dial with its bold black dial with white sub-dials featuring the distinctive 'Big Red' Daytona logo at 6 o'clock. Consigned directly by Clea with the support of her sisters a portion of the sales proceeds will benefit multiple charities founded by Paul Newman.

I'm guessing whomever bought the other one will likely spend a few bucks for the set.

I hope Rolex purchases this back.

I've always imagined it was Rolex that purchased the original one - center piece for their museum one day.

I would think that every model that Rolex have issued in the past, they would have kept at least one for their own museum.

Nothing sends the message 'buy our watches, they stand the test of time and go up in value' like a watch company buying them for an outrageous premium and tucking them away out of sight.

I guess this means this person bought at auction on behalf of Rolex?!

"Nathalie Monbaron
Which is why, in New York on October 26, 2017, when (ex) Phillips Geneva representative Dr Nathalie Monbaron bid $15.5 million (US$17.8 million with auction fees) for the Rolex Daytona 'Paul Newman' given to Paul Newman by his wife Joanne Woodward, I knew, with some decree of confidence, Rolex had bought it."

Looks like there is a 16520 white dial and 116519 WG Black dial Daytona still in the family as well.
