Your click is missing, that's why your watch isn't running. Nothing is preventing from the mainspring maintaining it's power.

to shorten stem should I use a thin carbide wheel, clipper or saw? Thanks

should I bother to remove scratches on the insidebridges, etc. Got very tired one night & and ruined some stuff with screwdriver.

I just use clipper and then stone the end of the stem to "arrowy" shape to accept threads of the crown.
When doing, don't try to force crown to the stem.
And, rather leave too much than take out too much

the pic pretty much describes the process of making the tip.

Does the stem fit in that pin vise?

Actually drilling machine could work also.
My pin vise has 4 collets to choose right fit.

Was the barrel lid popping open all the time?
Did you take out the mainspring and if so did you clean it and lube / put braking grease in there?

Yes you will need the hr wheel friction spring, it will keep the hour wheels in place when the dial is installed.
