The doctors say the my right leg will be non-weight bearing for 2-3 months but ultimately I should be back on two feet. Needless to say, I have not had much fun over the past two weeks. I have really missed the TRF gang.

Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.

Made my follow-up appointment with the surgeon yesterday and had the staples removed. He was pleased with the x-rays and wrote PT orders for range of motion exercises to commence. He estimates that my right leg will be non-weight bearing for 6-8 more weeks.

The great news is that I will be going home this Saturday and will continue with home therapy.

Fr. John, I wish you the very best in your recovery. As a BK amputee I can certainly understand what you are dealing with. It takes a little time, but at least we can track that accurately!! You'll be back up and around, I know you will.

Here's an x-ray of the leg two weeks after surgery:

The staples were removed right after the x-ray was taken. The doctor was pleased with how things looked. My next appointment is August 1st and he expects to see some bone healing. It still looks like I'll be non-weight bearing on that leg for 6-8 more weeks.

If you look closely in the upper left corner, you can see the plate that was used to repair my femur shattered in a car wreck in 1979.

Had a 3-month followup appointment with my surgeon last Thursday and the x-rays show that my shattered tibia and fibula are completely healed. He was amazed at the rapid healing for someone of my age (68) and gave me the OK to go full weight bearing.

He told me to replace the walker with a cane and come back in four weeks when he expects to discharge me. This is much earlier than the typical recovery time for a Type VI tibial plateau fracture such as mine. The doctor had initially told me to expect recovery to take 9-12 months so he (and I) consider four months to truly be a miracle.

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers. I am reaping the reward.

Great news!!

Be careful though... I know a couple guys that collect canes like you do with your Speedys - so just get one cane and thats it!

You could get one of those canes with the flames on the bottom like Dr. House uses to match the Speedmasters
