Rolex In Your 60s

If it were between 5-7.5k and your choices were a black face ExplorerII and a date just -blue dial, as a gift for a business associate--in his very early sixties--but adventurous-which is best? Wears suits often.

DJ all the way. He'd be able to wear it more often. The Explorer II 42mm is not a dress-up watch. But one fine weekend or daily (I don't wear suits.)

If it was me I would go with ExpII. But in your example DJ blue dial is better choice. Ask him before buying to make sure.

Unless the other guys are in their 60's, you need to listen to me.

EXP2 hands down.

The Explorer ii looks absolutely wonderful regardless of what you're wearing.
It's 2018. Choose the Explorer and disregard obsolite watch rules.

Rolex In Your 60s

I’m guessing the 39mm Explorer is best choice but you skipped that one.

It’s a natural choice as a subdued Adventure watch that looks fine with a suit. Tell him the story of Edmund Hillary and how this is the continuation of that lineage.

The black dial, smooth bezel and sized midway twixt a 36mm DJ and a 42mm Expl. II just makes more sense to me...

New Exp 1, DJ41, OP, and Air-King are the ones that fit in the price range.

I bought an OP39 with blue dial specifically for my 60's (not long to go now) with a view to it being my one watch for all occasions, dress up, dress down, and cost of ownership a none-issue. Any of the watches you mention would be a fantastic gift, the black dial of the Exp being more subtle compared to the blue of the DJ in my opinion, depending on the gentlemans tendancy to wear colours less muted or not.

Agreed.

I do not like the Datejust at all. I would hope someone would never gift me one.

How big are his wrists? If 6.75 inch or smaller, then the exp2 might be too big and if so he may never wear it.

Age should not be the deciding factor, even if it is an important one.

I would think that the recipient would be thrilled with either, but the watch that most fits the man's lifestyle would be best.

Personally, I just don't think that you can go wrong with a DateJust in a case where there might be some doubt.

A DJ goes with everything, although a black dial would be more versatile, in my humble judgement.

I'm 69 years old, by the way.
