This thread needs to be moved to the Omega section (mods do your magic!) and someone like fr John can chime in with his excellent knowledge..
I initially wanted the hesalite as this is the closest to the original, although the sapphire sandwich has the benefit of being able to see the movement...so for an extra couple hundred bucks I'd got for the sandwich...

I went for the hesalite, as I think that's the definitive Speedmaster. Scratches are minimal on it after a year's near-daily wear. Some people prefer the durability of sapphire, but I think the watch loses a bit of its warmth, and I find sapphire really attracts grease and is difficult to keep clean - you don't get the same problem with hesalite. However, you do get the display caseback on the sapphire version, and the cal. 1861 (like any manual wind chronograph movement) is truly beautiful to behold

I've owned a couple of dozen Speedy Pros over the years including two with sapphire crystals.
I much prefer the hesalite. It is more authentic and has a warmer feel and look. The sapphire crystal has a gray "halo" adjacent to the bezel that detracts and obscures the dial. And IMO, the fear of hesalite scratches is a non-issue. I have been wearing my vintage 105.012 (same model worn by Armstrong) in regular rotation for eight years. During that time, I have had to polish the crystal only one time. A dab of Polywatch with a couple of minutes of polishing and the crystal looked like new. And hesalite will not shatter like sapphire which is the reason NASA Speedies are hesalite only. Not only would crystal fragments floating in a capsule be a problem in space, they would also be a problem on earth. Those pieces could enter the movement and create serious movement problems. Go for the real Speedy Pro, go hesalite. |

Hesalite all the way, its not just that it can be polished, the large domed surface makes the speedy hesalite more forgiving than say a 1680 sub which has a sharp edge to its crystal and a flat crystal surface. These are just way easy to maintain

I really like the "first Omega in space" watch that's coming out now/soon. If it came on a bracelet, that's the one that I would buy.

A seller on TRF is selling a excellent condition 1974 moonwatch. This thing has a great dial and hands. If my wrists weren't so damm small it would still be in my collection...

I would go for the hesalite. That particular model is very high on my wish list.
