1950s Rolex GMT

What happened to the GMT writing on this dial? Curious. Was it released like this or has time just faded it away.

Thank you.

I have confidence it is a Rolex dial, but it has been refinished... by a blind man.

It was sold by Hessfineauctions on Ebay.

The Realized price was $13,533.00

Is this a reasonable price or not giving the repaint on the dial?

It was laughingly described as a “Tropical dial fresh barn find” The description said “with a heavily faded dial “...they weren’t kidding . Hands are also completely shot. I think the only saving grace is from the pictures the movement , case-back and bracelet could well have been genuine, I guess it could well be a case of fools and their money as stated, on the other hand the new owner could/ may have a nice dial and hands tucked away in which case he /she may be onto a winner. If not that’s an awful lot to pay for a watch with that dial. I guess we’ll never know. As an aside again a very questionable description verging on the fraudulent side from a supposedly reputable auction house, not for the first time I might add

It’s authentic Rolex insert from the 70’s but not original to the watch which should b Bakelite.

I blame it on autoconnect.

Really? If everything else is authentic Rolex, it’s not a bad price considering it’s the no crown guard gmt.

Personally I would just find a service dial n hands, then wear as is. How cool is that? I wouldn’t bother to restore it.

def an authentic insert. def a genuine dial that has been refinished. Def a "barn find" bought from original owner who had stored in his garage... it was his own neglected watch. Also, it was mentioned that the dial and date wheel should be refinished. it also stated Bezel condition: Bi-directional , faded with moderate surface scratches ; Crystal: Acrylic, heavy surface scratches ; Numerals Circle and line ; Hands: Skeleton, needs to be re-lumed, moderate oxidation ; Movement Type: automatic ; Movement Condition: Very good ; the black roulette wheel is very strong but red has faded ; Minor damage on teeth on back case, but teeth are not worn down, minor surface scratch” I thougth my wife and her posters did a pretty good job. I do acknowledge that they also should have mentioend the dial was repainted as well as just saying it was in awful conditon. Thanks. It wil be relisted anyway....

Jess Hess ebay auctions have been called out and questioned in the past here on TRF. Just do a search and I'm sure you'll find them.

If the original sellers didn’t say horrible refinished dial in the add....then they are trying to be shady that’s for sure.....everybody knows that’s the first thing in the description that should be disclosed....barn find is more like junk find

To fix up this watch would cost a lot, I would suggest you add up little more cash and purchase a new Rolex watch.

its a good parts watch. My wifes auctions are straight up. Sold a nice sodalite dial Daytona today. Sometimes her crew messes up btw. They transposed the ref number on it! And the watch in question here , the gmt, was not paid for so she relisted it and I asked her to please make sure everyone knew it was a crappy dial. So the relisted the gmt as "bad dial" in the title. It will still bring 11k to 15k though. She listed a 6263 today too. And a 5513 that some guy took to Rolex and had them put a new dial, new bezel, new EVERYTHING on it and paid like 3k or more to have the remove the orig parts! Cheers!

Jeff: I have never purchased but follow your watches on the bay and you get some super interesting and awesome watches!
The 5513 you are referring to is, I mean for watch world standards, heart breaking and an expensive heart break...that poor 5513 is almost a textbook example of how RSC will de-soul a great vintage watch.

I know. The old fellow was so PROUD that he got it fixed from Rolex. For 2300 dollars plus tax and shipping. I asked if they gave him the option of keeping the original bezel and dial and he said no. I wonder if ROLEX keeps these things or throws them out.... or...???
