Has anyone else gone down from a 40mm to a 36mm as their daily wearer?

Don't get me wrong, I love my pre-ceramic 16610LN submariner. It wears great, and I enjoy its design very much. However, recently, I have come into ownership of a 36mm 1601 vintage Datejust.

There is something special about the smaller size I cannot quite put my finger on. The Datejust is not only extremely comfortable to wear, but it has a large presence despite its smaller size. Perhaps it's the jubilee bracelet. Perhaps it's its thick oyster case.

At least for now, I have switched over to the thinking that 36mm may be the perfect size for a daily...

If and when I purchase a YG DayDate, it will be a 36mm. Until then, I have no 36mm watches. I think the 36 looks great on you and it’s a stunning reference

I tried with a 16200 (not as a daily), but it just didn't work. My wife has it now.
More often than not I have a 16610 on

I went from 116613lb to 116234

The bluesy was a great watch, and very beautiful, but after wearing it for a couple of months I felt that it was a little too flashy for me.

I slowly started looking at the DJ, in stainless steel.

I liked the look and how the 36mm wears, then I picked a dial

Whatever you want you get used to! In my collection I have two Panerais, a 372 and a 449 both of which are 47mm. I tried the 372 (which I loved the look of) but went off it when I put it on. As it was preowned the store said to take it on approval for a week. I bought it after two days and im completely used to it as a weekend wearer. My daily wearer is a Patek 5146J which is 39Mm and it takes a few hours to get used to wearing it after the PAM 47m. My wife has my DJ 36m and it’s too small for me....until I put it back on! I’ve always found after 2/3 days and you’re used to any watch. As an aside at SIHH Panerai are really pushing their 42m watches.

It fits you well. I also feel fit and how it looks on the wrist depends on the case and bracelet combo. My 40mm Daytona and my 36mm AP

Depends on each individuals wrist size (and preference!)...

The 36 looks fine in the pics you shared, also a great choice for a daily...enjoy!

It's hard to beat a 36mm in terms of comfort on the wrist. Don't doubt your decision, OP. Beautiful watch as well.

I had always been drawn towards smaller sized watches, but with 7.25 -7.5 in wrists I resisted due to the recent brainwashing that a "mans" watch had to be 40mm or more. A few years back, my dealer had a great deal on a datejust 16014. I agonized over the decision but finally decided to take the plunge. Was I ever glad I did.

I enjoyed the comfort and the look of the DJ and it eventually led to my purchase of a 18238 Day Date. I still enjoy my Sub C's when I want a sporty look but could easily daily a 36mm. My DD is essentially my daily all winter long. Give it shot, you wont regret it. A few pics below....

I Love the 40 mm wrist presence... I could probably live
with a 36 mm and it would work but it wouldn't be my daily
driver... My new to me 16610 Sub feels just perfect.
I'd stick with the Sub personally...

36mm is a great and classic size. The dials on the DJ and Sub are essentially the same size too so it helps the difference appear less drastic.

I never felt all that comfortable wearing a 40mm sports watch with business attire. Something about the aesthetics just looks a bit out of place. Like Roger Federer showing up to a tennis match dressed appropriately but wearing a football helmet. I bought this 36mm Explorer which did the trick:

This was the photo that gave me the idea to give it a try:

I own mostly SDs and Subs, but I took delivery of this 118206 Platinum DD36 yesterday, and I’ve vowed to wear it for a month straight. So far, I LOVE IT!!

I just received notice that my Day-Date 1803 is serviced and is being sent. Now I have two 36mm Day-Dates including my 2015 model. It doesn’t get better than that...

Not gone down to 36mm. Actually got rid of everything not 40mm including all below and above.

Absolutely not, 36mm looks dainty by today's standard. It also feels old man, kind of like older guys hanging on to mullets and flat top haircuts long after they went out of style. Of course, many will argue that the 36mm in Rolex is classic. So, I'm just expressing my opinion and everyone is entitled to theirs.

seems like since the dd40 came out everyone has forgotten about the dd36 but its nice to see people still love 36mm watches. in my case i have a small wrist so i have no choice but i still love the look of 36mm regardless

I have watches ranging from 26mm to 42mm.

I enjoy them all, but after wearing the larger ones, I'm quite relieved to spend some time with my smaller ones.

I've been wearing my OP 1503 and my 114270 for the last week or so and I'll be sticking with the smaller range for awhile before moving up.

I wear my DJ36 more than any other. Next would be the OP39.

Your watches look stunning and perfect on you. I too struggled with the < 40mm "brainwashing," but in the end, it looked right so I went for it.

God forbid that a man should have lived long enough to have some historical perspective or to feel confident enough not to be a slave to fashion or to not have his masculinity defined by the size of his watch.

Get back to us in twenty years and tell us how the younger set feels about your gargantuan, antiquated, mechanical, watch. Will you have tossed it by then onto the "ash-heap of history?"
