Odd email from watchfinder

Got this email this afternoon from Watchfinder (UKs biggest grey dealers).

They were offering a 2004 16610 with box and papers at £6k. That’s is significantly cheaper than anything I’ve seen before in the last few years, and wonder what it means for the market.

I guess they’ve either got a LOT of stock they’re trying to get rid of, or they’re anticipating the market crashing.

Got the same thing here in the US. Nice bait & switch on their part. One low priced piece to drive traffic and, hopefully, sales of pricier pieces.

A loss leader pricing strategy, a term common in marketing, refers to an aggressive pricing strategy in which a store prices its goods below cost to stimulate sales of other, profitable goods. With such a pricing strategy, a business is selling its goods at a loss to lure customer traffic away from competitors.

Couldn’t they clean it up for the picture?

It might cost a grand just to get rid of the grime

Interesting concept.
But surely no-one is then buying one for £8.5k having just seen the same watch for £6k? Do they not devalue their own goods that way?

Yeh, this is a crappy way to describe an incredibly well-built luxury timepiece.

Maybe they're just over stocked. I haven't tried selling anything but I imagine they'll either bid not to buy or not bid at all. We Buy Any car are the same at the moment, they don't want stock so the offer prices are ridiculously low, well below book.

They did the same thing last year, but they only had one watch at that price. Just a sales flyer to drive traffic.

I once got yelled at in middle school for calling a tank top a “wife beater,” as I honestly didn’t know what it meant (11 at the time). Calling anything a “daily beater” feels strange to me, to this day…

I expected someone to post this - I clicked the link pretty quickly after I got the email and it was already sold. It was just one watch discounted a bit to drive hits to the website.

I got the email. The link went to a selection of higher priced NRs. So far as I can tell in photos on their website, their most keenly priced Subs and GMT Masters, or the ones they offer in flash sales, look like the most beaten up specimens.

My first thought too! Zoom in on the bracelet - it’s horrendous. However good the deal it was not a good look.

Watchfinder have also had a sale running for a short period too, though I find they always seem above market average for their stock.

Following the price rise at the turn of the new year, I have not seen greys increasing prices - in years gone by they would have followed suit.

Hopefully a sign that things are coming back to reality a little.

Overall these discount watches are pretty rough. They have enough gap between the bracelet and lug to read a newspaper.

Reminds me of the joke back when there was this Rihanna/Chris Brown affair - "For Chris Brown, every shirt is a wife beater!" - domestic violence is of course a serious matter, but I must admit that the joke made me laugh.

It’s the lowest price on the block strategy
It’s exactly how Walmart functions. They advertise a cheap $100 tv. But whhen you get there you see a super nice tv that you really want. And it’s only twice the price

i believe Wal*Mart, Target, etc offer rainchecks for advertised items out of stock. WatchFinder needs to offer Rainchecks for the highly discounted Sub

Speedmaster date today in the uk for £1,750 - I was on the site in a few minutes and it was gone. All that was left is one at £2,960.

Probably for the best - if they keep this up, I’ll end up buying something I don’t need or want because there’s only seconds to think about it.

Haha ye! Though at least with watchfinder you get two weeks to send it back if you change your mind!

I think watchfinder are stuck with a lot of stock they paid a little too much for

They are a big company so assume they can weather their greed

Yeah you're right there. I took a couple of hot pieces there a couple of years ago. Their offer was an insult.
