Great guitarist but I think he’s such a knob.

Agree that JM is a true watch geek, as opposed to other celebs that merely buy and wear watches. Still...whenever I see someone whose collection of important watches only includes EXPENSIVE important watches, I lose a certain level of respect.

So... for a guy who can (and probably has) spent six-to-seven figures on a single watch, does that make his collection strictly expensive?

I follow Alton Brown for the cooking, but I really enjoy seeing the watches he has/acquires.

This is an outdated assumption. China by now has it's own pop culture and fashion tastes. No one is listening to John Mayer there for example and luxury brands bend over backwards to court the Chinese consumer. This includes producing goods that are attractive to Chinese people. So maybe the reverse of what you say is true.

You are likely incorrect considering just last year he played shows in New Zealand, Honk Kong, Thailand and South Africa just to make a few.

John Mayer is solely responsible for the 116508 price skyrocketing in the United States. China has been aware that the green dialed watches are intriguing, but Mayer is the one who made us Americans go bonkers over it. Anyone who is trying to argue that Talking Watches w/ John Mayer 2 did NOT effect the market prices is wrong.

Talking Watches w/ John Mayer 2 for sure for sure did. I think it's because folks are "man-crushing" on John Mayer in a similar way that they did/do on Steve McQueen :-)

But in the rest of the world he is still an unknown . I’ve learned from this thread he is a musician, is he a drummer or piano player .

I’m not promoting his music, just get frustrated when people say nonsensical things without taking 30 seconds to use a search engine

For some reason, when a "pop" star shows a bit of "substance," folks who think they know more about that "substance" get their shorts in a knot. The folks following the Grateful Dead did the same (including me). We're all singing a different tune these days, and JM is playing the guitar for us, usually with a big AP on his wrist.

He's extremely well known. I don't know where you got your info from. The guy is a legit musician and one of the best guitar players in the world. |

I'm a big JM fan because of his music, which I have liked for years and listen to when I work out at the gym. As to watches, he has influenced friends like Ed Sheeren but not publicly. The Hodinkee interviews had some effect but he does not put himself out as an expert or influencer, only as an enthusiast and collector. But haters gonna hate.

He had a great line in that article referring to his COMEX sub,
“This is a watch, if you wore it to dinner, it’s invisible to people unless they know what it is,” says Mayer. “Those are my favorite watches.”

I should add that JM is a phenomenal guitarist. The Grateful Dead had their pick of virtually any guitarist in the world and they picked JM. So, yeah, he has a bit of talent.

He has some true gems in his collection. I’d still give the nod for influence to JM with his contributions on the content side at Hodinkee. Ed’s are more limited. JM did a heck of an article on the Black Bay from an artist’s perspective. Ed Sheeran is a newer collector than JM as well, but I’d put him right up there too. We should mention Eric Clapton as well, but perhaps not as influential as he used to be in the watch industry. Eric Clapton’s Slowhand at 70 performance at Royal Albert Hall was incredible. He performed wearing his 116610LN |
