Buddy Asking for Watch Advice

I have a good friend, not a watch guy, that’s entering practice as a psychiatry PA. He needs an under $500 watch that can be worn under a suit during the week, but is also weekend and casual friendly. Preferably automatic and solid movement. Just tells time and date, nothing fancy.

What say you, TRF? What should he buy as his “starter?”

Thanks!

Seiko... whichever style works for him.

You could look at Frederique Constant who has a decent line of dress watches at good prices.

Actually some of the best value of mechanical watch out there.

Another vote for Seiko.

I think SRPB43J1 ticks all the boxes. It’s a dress watch but with a nice pop of colour so works as a casual watch. WR is 50m so it’ll survive everyday contact with water unless you’re in the navy and it’s £300 here so I assume comes in under the budget.

This may be stating the obvious but though the movement is solid I would not expect Rolex-like accuracy. I don’t know what the official accuracy of the movement is supposed to be but I have the same 4R35 movement in a different Presage and it’s about +15 seconds per day. Perfectly good for this price point, but if your mate isn’t a watch guy he needs to know that if he wants better accuracy he needs a quartz or a much bigger budget.

If he doesn’t like the Seikos being recommended, I’d say to increase the budget a bit and get an Omega Aqua Terra.

Seiko and Orient are good choices.

I'm a big fan of the Bambinos.

Those are beautiful. Especially the dark dial in the last one. The strap in the first photo is stunning! Great suggestion!

Victorinox Alliance

Bought one for my 20 year old son, who is in college, and is coincidentally studying to be a psychologist.

Very nice watch that I purchased at Macy. Got the friends and family discount and paid around $300.

Currently he wears the Alliance, but is talking that he wants my Tudor BB at graduation.

Definitely Seiko. Or a Hamilton from Jomashop as their prices are reduced. Plus there's usually a coupon code.

This one is a quartz, but very nice.

Definitely this, get a SARB while they're still pretty readily available. Seiya Japan, ShoppinginJapan.com, Amazon, etc. They're out there and such great pieces for the money

Large enough to rest on a table and still clearly see the time and you can have fun swapping bands with the money saved.

Sarb033, Great quality, versatile watch. They look great on dark brown, gray, and black leather straps. Low key, and classy.

Seiko is an obvious choice, but don’t overlook Hamilton.
They have a lot of interesting designs, colors, etc. and now many have an in-house 70h movement.

I actually went through this with a buddy of mine. He wanted something a little modern but with classic watch styling. He ended up liking the simple aesthetics of MVMT watches, and they’re pretty cheap $1-300

This is the one he got. Good luck!
