I'm sure I could find someone who genuinely believes a Rolex Sub shouldn't be worn with formal attire......but I'm not sure I would trust them.

Perfectly fine to wear a suit with a Sub.

Nicholas Cage wore a submariner with a tux when he was stealing the declaration of independence in national treasure. LOL

It's not about the suit - it's about where you are wearing the suit.

You'll often spot me at work as a company president in a fitted suit, polo, and sneakers.

At that point, do you even care if my watch is "formal enough"?

I am just as happy to wear a Sub with a suite as I am to wear my DJ 16014 with shorts and sandals and vice versa.

Of course your can wear a sub with a suit, and most people will pay no attention to it whatsoever, however if you're truly into tailoring or menswear then you're probably less likely to want to do so.

If you are wearing a suit with a Sub, then there are certain people, me included, who will conclude that you either don't own something more appropriate, or don't have the understanding to know that a Sub isn't 'appropriate' for formal wear.

It's fine margins, but someone with a true interest in sartorialism would consider brogues inappropriate in certain scenarios whereas others wouldn't know what broguing is in the first place.

I'm aware of how pretentious this sounds.

Well said. Who owns black captoe (or even plain) oxfords probably owns a dresswatch anyways.

I'm guessing that most folks who would notice probably wouldn't say anything. Like letting the guy wearing a belt and his suspenders pass without comment.

Wearing a Sub with a suit - yes or no?

Yes. Black Submariner. Absolutely. I do so all the time.

Not sure about Hulk, Bluesy, or Smurf. I suppose it depends on color of suit, shirt and tie.

Someone mentioned Apple Watch above. That’s a great point. I see people wearing a suit all the time with an Apple Watch on. If you can wear an Apple Watch with a suit nowadays, then wearing a Submariner is no longer debatable IMHO.

Agreed. I say wear your Sub with a suit IF you lack a "proper" dress watch of approximate or greater horological merit. That is, if you are wearing a suit then wear the Sub if it is your only watch; wear the Sub if you have only the Sub and something like a Seiko dress watch; leave the Sub and wear something like a JLC (Reverso or Master Ultra Thin) if you own the latter.

Sure. Why not? Sea Dweller, Daytona & Speedmaster are good to go as well. Sport watches with a blue dial (ex. Tudor Pelagos) maybe not as much.

Men used to wear suits in public for recreation, often at sporting events, too.

Sure, as long as you understand that it's still not a dress watch. I'd be totally comfortable wearing a sub to "business formal" events that fall on the light side of formal.

Yes, why not? The world, trends, styles, etc. are different than what it was decades ago.

The Sub or any Rolex for that matter has evolved.

It's down to personal preference to wear it or not during any occasion. The average Rolex purchaser might think the opposite... "Should I wear this watch near a body of water" before they go "Should I wear this watch to a formal occasion."

Welcome to 2020!
