Just inherited 5513 - What next?
Hello,
I am new here. I was recently given a 5513 (1.7xxxxx) that has probably not been worn for at least 15 years. It was probably in a dresser drawer. My local dealer sent it to a Rolex Service Center, and this is what they recommend: Necessary Full Service - $1000 Crown 704-0 AC MONOBLOC - $87 Optional DIAL - $510 HANDS - $69 SECOND HAND - $36 BEZEL DISC - $48 In my uneducated opinion, all of the optional parts look okay to me. Seems like it is better to not replace them? I have the original bracelet, but they say it is beyond repair. It is in rough shape, very "stretched". Recommending a 93150 20/16 580 12 link for $1062. The full service will replace the acrylic crystal (pretty scratched up), but it also includes "refinishing of the case". I have read that maybe I should not "refinish" the case? It is not in bad shape, just the normal wear that could be expected. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |

Don’t replace the dial and hands... or the bezel insert. Just the service on the movement without polishing the case.
PS don’t replace the bracelet either! Welcome to the forum and please post an image. (Of the watch) |

I would be ok with full service, no polishing of anything, and the crown as long as they returned the original crown. Unless it pressure tests with the existing crown then i would just ok the service. Which, i can’t imagine it wouldn’t test fine with the existing crown.

Have them send it back to you UNTOUCHED, and then send it to a CW21 independant watchmaker!! I recommend Philip Ridley

Do not go for the optional parts!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave the original parts which not just adds to the value, but keeps the integrity of the originality. That's the beauty of it.
I inherited a 5513 a long time ago and had it serviced and left everything original except the crown which I got back and no polishing. They tried the same thing with me and replacing those exact same parts. It runs like a champ and looks exactly like the way my grandfather wore it. Just how I wanted it, down to the 51 year old discolored bezel pearl. |

Rolex always recommends replacing the dial and hands if the lume no longer glows, which it won't in an older Sub.
If the plots and hands are still intact and look good, replacing them will affect the originality/value of your heirloom. I wouldn't do it because the lume in a watch really isn't good enough to be of much use vs. loss of originality. Since Rolex only "recommends" those parts be replaced, there is likely nothing physically wrong with them and they are sound. Keep them, you could always change them out at some future date if needed.

Post pictures of the watch in its now-state first ! I'd service the caliber but I'd for sure not to anything optional (and not because of a money reason) !

This. Rolex can service modern watches well, but often ruin the value of vintage pieces (whether intentially or not). Don't risk it. Send it to someone who's sympathetic about originality in vintage watch restoration.

In case it was not already mentioned, Rolex USA (RSC) will keep all replaced parts, and will use current service parts. Only Rolex Heritage Service in Switzerland uses era correct parts (if available), but charges huge money (and still keeps replaced parts).

Do not refinish case! Some photos would help for better advice.

Ditto this. Crown may need replacing if tube is worn. Phillip can do this and will return original parts as well. I wouldn’t trust Rolex to do anything for fear they would polish the case and/or replace original parts and destroy the value of your watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Still only 1 post from OP...
I hope this isn’t going to be one of those posts where he comes back in a few weeks (when this comes back to mind) to show off pics of his mint sub and then reads all the replies! |

Just inherited 5513 - What next? UPDATE
Hello,
I am back. Hopefully smarter than before. Thanks for all of the feedback, and most of you will be happy to know that I have not done anything with the watch yet. RSC sent it back in the same condition it was in when I sent it to them. A few folks have reached out recently and I apologize for not getting back to you, but for now I am keeping the watch and will most likely have some work done to maintain the "vintageness" of the watch. I have spoken to Philip Ridley and Michael Young and will most likely go this route when the time is right. In the meantime, here are a couple of amateur pictures of the watch. Not sure why they are sideways. Any additional feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Brandon |

I love these stories - people inheriting actual family heirlooms.
I don't know what i'll receive but I doubt an expensive watch in my lifetime. In fact, might end up being the giver in the future - hopefully it'll be as much pleasure as receiving one. |

Nice watch mate. Do not send to MY. This is a piece for Bob or LAWW. Very little need be done - a sympathetic service and cleaning specifically. Please request the return of the removed parts. A nice new shaved dome top hat crystal would really compliment the dial and hands. I’d also source a new bracelet and retire the existing so you can wear without stressing yourself. The price tag will be around $2,250.00 all told, but well worth the expense.
