16800 help (8.7 mil serial)

Apologies up front for the photos, they are what I have at the moment. I'm looking for "help" in identifying any flaws or concerns w this 16800, 8.7 mil serial.

Seller claims everything is original to the watch. I've heard hands can age differently than the lume and pip, so I'm inclined to believe he's being honest.

I know I need movement and case back shots, just don't have them yet.

Thanks in advance!

How much? The bracelet is in need of some serious love or replacement and I think you can find a much better example out there.

Bracelet is a 5/10 at best, and I will prob put it on a NATO and just save the bracelet for a later time to get restored.
He is asking 5800 but pretty sure I could wiggle it to 5500, maybe a bit less as I'm not sure quite how flexible his price is.

At that price if everything else checks out I'd go for it. You could even source a decent set of matching hands and it'd look great. Post up the other pictures when you get them. Try and get some in better lighting too.

Thanks Sean, I am largely thinking so hard about it bc it seems like a fair deal.
He claims hands original to the watch, which I like, but some matching hands would look killer. I will certainly update with more pics when I get them.
It's hard to see, but outer lugs look OK, maybe a light polish in the past, the inner lugs somehow look more roughed up.

8.7 serial if my memory serves correct possibly 86... If so dial looks good, datewheel looks good... hands mighty not match but tritium all agev differently.... End links should be 593 but for 1986 it should be rounded 3 and not flat 3 like yours cause they ended with the matte dials in 84, but not a big deal and the clasp should be letter K... Also the insert is fine can be like yours or flat 4...otherwise pics are terrible

Watch is attractive at that price. You’ll need about $1000 to sort out the hands and bracelet. Still fair imo. Better pics would help.

Glosstritium: According to the numbers I am seeing, 8.7 puts it at a 1985.

Do you mind if you have a moment letting me know more about the "rounded 3 and not flat 3"? I will do some internet looking at various examples, but was unaware of that change with the matte in 1984.

Date charts are rough estimates at best. None of them are confirmed by Rolex and are created from data gathered by collectors. +/- 2 years isn’t unheard of.

He’s talking about the 3 stamped on the end link. I didn’t know that was a change until he brought it up in another thread.

Like I said your flat top 3 end link is not a deal breaker just a period correct thing and for the price the guy is asking for I would buy it... You can have the band tightened if need be, I would wear that with pride, only going up in value... I even showed the pic to a dealer and he said he would give you $5800 for it and he will flip it...

Here is a pic of the end link round 3 that should be on gloss dial 16800/168000 when matte was transitioned that's the end links they used but again majority of the people have no clue and think the flat 3 is correct so you're fine...

Thanks for the clarification and the photo illustrating as such! You learn some thing new about vintage Rolex everyday, I had no idea about the change until this thread.

That' correct. I have a 16800 matte dial with serial 8.70 from 84, definitely one of the last Subs of series 8.7 with matte dials. Rough estimates are fine and all, but they're just that...

Yes you have towards the end of matte dials and we're talking about end links yours should have a flat top 3 in the 593 and gloss dials should have rounded 3 in the 593...
