Why not masking the numbers? I actually thought they did it when they blasted.
My supervisor taught it to me as it was taught to him in Geneva. Blasting the numbers is part of it.
No metal is lost during blasting so it doesn't matter anyway.

Yacht-Master bezel refinishing

We have specific bezel holders for during the blasting. Only the numbers need to be polished again, they are fully blasted as well.

That is what my Rolex certified watchmaker said, too. He was told by Rolex he shouldn’t try because they don’t sell just inserts if it is damaged beyond refurbishment.

We also wondered if you found hallmarks on underside. Was this a bezel from 116622, or 16622?

This bezel is from a midsize (168623). The pictures make it look like a full size though.

Looks fantastic. Was the bezel clamped onto a rotating or spinning jig while being blasted and then lapped? I would think that even the bead nozzle would be in a fixed position.

Ehm no.
You have these space suit gloves and do it with a 'pistol' nozzle. No fancy stuff here.

That kind of encourages me to get a yacht master, was always held back by how terrible they end up looking eventually, but if it can be restored that well, it’s be less of a concern.

That's reassuring to see. Looks great! Do you work for Rolex in Geneva or can other repair centers do this too?

Something I have wondered about is the properties of platinum that never really disappear when scratched but supposed to be just 'moved' compared to gold which actually comes off. Is that what happens here too or will the bezel be slightly thinner after such repair?

While gold and platinum are more malleable than steel, there is indeed a lot less loss of metal when working with platinum, it is a pain to polish. But there's always a slight loss of material.

I'm new here so the sight won't let me post any pictures until I have 10 posts.

Can a platinum YM bezel that is scratched & dinged up on both the polished & blasted areas be refinished? What would the approximate cost be?

Could/would Rolex replace it? Cost?

Replacement is around $1500, and refinishing is included in service cost. Will not be refinished outside of a service.

Threads like this are great and so interesting! It's great to see how "new" the YM bezel can be after wear and some RSC "magic". Really puts some perspective into owning a YM.

Thanks for sharing!
