Pretty Bummed, My Submariner Date Broke Yesterday
What do you think I'm in for in regards to repair? RSC vs Independant?
My new to me Submariner date broke the other day. Granted it's from the late 80's, and I don't know the service history, but I got it about 4 months ago, so I'm a little bummed this happened so soon. I don't wear it much, so when I do I need to set the date and time. Sometimes I notice that it's tough to find the correct notch to set either the time or date when pulling out the stem, maybe that should have been a reg flag. In this case, the date was only a few days off, so I just advanced the time to set the date as well. I did not notice until maybe a half hour later that the seconds hand was ticking back and forth. I pulled the crown out to stop it, and noticed a "rattling" sound coming from the watch when I gently shake it. I'm going to bring it back to the place I bought it from, not sure if there is any warranty or guarantee. Thanks |

Personally, after having just delt with RSC, I'd go Independent. There are a few good ones that people here recommend...Rolliworks, LAWW, Watch Buyers Group to name a few.

How certain are you that the seller dealt you an authentic Sub?

Rattling noise is most likely the rotor grinding on the bridges due to a very worn axle. The back and forth ticking (and not actually running?) Is a common symptom of a broken mainspring.
A good independent or RSC are both good choices, go with whatever you like but please do extensive research. |

Agree that it is likely a broken mainspring.
This is something that cannot be predicted, so it doesn't matter if you had the watch 4 months, or 4 days, it could just snap. An 80's Sub is a well known product and most good shops with Rolex parts accounts can do the job. There isn't a lot of difference in costs, but an independent may save a hundred bucks or so.

Some shops clean and re-use the old mainspring if in good condition. It's an old practice not used by modern shops. We return old parts to clients. Usually this is just old gaskets and mainspring. When needed, reversing wheels, weight axle, train wheels, balance staff etc. We have no use for them and it also helps neutralizes any sense of doubt about part replacement.

I ended up taking it back to the store I got it from. They said they would have their rolex certified water repair person look at it. After three weeks I got it back, the issue was a worn reversing wheel which they fixed it at no charge.
Thanks for all the advice |

Do you know the service history? Its an older 168000 Submariner and the reverse wheel was worn. While at the watch shop-did the repair person make any suggestions?
Regular servicing is the reasonable expectation of a quality timepiece. Pressure tests are the minimal requirement for a dive watch which may see salt water. Change out those gasket rings-get it serviced. |

I would rather get it fully serviced and have piece of mind for next few years.
